When Colin Baker came on my PBS station I was so into Dr Who it could have been anyone as the Doctor I wouldn't have cared, I thought he did a great job and was given a raw deal.

Arouind here, me and the gang liked him too. It was different, still weird, and the Doc was kinda scary. (Will he save the universe, or blow it up 'cos it looked at him funny?) It DID seem like they didn't quite know what to do with him though. Knowing NOW what was goin' on behind the scenes helps explain that.

I mentioned this 100 times in the past but having met Colin at a convention back in the day BEFORE he even premiered as the Doctor in the US helped endear him to me ... Not only meeting him but the fact he was so nice in real life.
When I met him PBS was still playing later Davison stories (a bit behind)
I had no idea Colin was the "new Doctor" until well into the convention when I met him.
To be honest, I was expecting Tom Baker and thought the promos had typos.
I'm still a little let down to this day it wasn't Tom --- but i'm glad I met ColinComment

The Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy years were by far my least favourite era of Doctor Who.
The show had definitely lost something by that point.PUNY HUMANS!Comment

I don't by he was screwed by Doctor in Distress. Sure it's was cheesey, but it was also a charity project. I can't see how a single for charity harmed him that much.
I used to love it when Dr Demento would play that song.Mortui Vivos Docent

I never noticed the coat. I knew he sounded harsh.
I only had eyes for Peri. And that Flattering American accent that would emphasise the 'ER" s.
Back in 85 when I read in a newsletter he planned on being the Doctor even longer than Tom I knew he jinxed himself.
I wrote Colin Baker ( as well as a bunch of other Who celebrities) and he sent me three autographed photos and letters with a little cat face on them. he was nice by mail.Comment

I remember when Pat Troughton was doing the interview, back when the show was on WNJN 50 from NJ.
He had a lot of nerve calling Colin "Miss Piggy", especially when he wasn't all that slender himself.
Not to mention that Colin wasn't really all THAT heavy; not compared to what he is now.
When he was first on the show as Maxil, he looked pretty good in the red spandex leggings, shortie tabard and long cape. If he had really been all that heavy, he'd have looked dreadful with cottage cheese thighs and droopy glutes.
He was supposed to be Dr. Who, not Dr. Hardbody.
That was Chris Eccleston.JediJaidaComment

I think a lot of people are misinterpreting the Miss Piggy comment as a fat joke and it's not.
It's because of the sixth Doctor's flamboyant dress and attitude (drama queen), not because Colin was a little chubby.
When people call Troughton the Little Tramp, they arent doing it because he weighs the same amount as Chaplin.Last edited by Mikey; Jan 19, '11, 7:11 PM.Comment

Hmm, being called a Fatty or a Drama Queen.
Well, I've been called both at times.
Personally I EXPECT my friends to make fun of me on national television.
Anyway, he was in the USA so maybe he thought Baker would never see it.
Or maybe theyre not thinskinned and can take a joke.
Do they have Political Correctness in England?
I remeber Tom Baker Making fun of McCoy while he was hosting a British show semi recentlly. He was showing off his new action figure . . . .

Proberly didn't help Colin when he went on record saying he was going to last longer than Tom Baker....he does have a real love for the show and the character though and he was treated awfully by the BBC...and Micheal Grade in particular (it's been reported that Micheal Grade was dating Liza Goddard at the time who was Colin Baker's ex wife) who hated Who (During an appearance on Room 101 in 2002, Grade said, "I thought [Doctor Who] was rubbish, I thought it was pathetic, I'd seen Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T., and then I had to watch these cardboard things clonking across the floor trying to scare kids!" )ENGLISH AND DAMN PROUD OF ITBritish by birth....English by the grace of God.
Yes Jamie...it is big isn't it....

One of the best arguments for keeping Doctor Who on the air, was, and still is, that it's a merchandising bemoth. Michael Grade has to be an absolute nutter to axe it just because he didn't like it! It brings in way more money than it costs to make. That's why every lame excuse he gave for putting it on "hiatus" didn't wash.
I didn't see the Troughton Miss Piggy comments even tho I live in the NY/NJ area. I watched the clip today and it's a non-stop jokefest on Colin's weight. Joke after joke is on Colin's weight. I don't see how there is any other way to interpet it.Last edited by johnmiic; Jan 19, '11, 11:47 PM.Comment
