The FOX TVM does not actually spec. the Daleks put the Master on Trial. I think it states the trial took place on Skaro. Skaro has been depicted in previous stories as having a human population too. I could accept it if the human population put the Master on trial.

What works against this tho is there is an electronic voice heard in the shot where the Master is executed but what it says I could not make out. At that time they were not sure what form the Daleks would take or if they would even be used so it was left vague. They played both sides of it by not nailing it down and it causes a lot of problems common-sense wise. A better explanation is it was all a trick on the part of the Master to try and steal The Doctor's remaining regenerations. That has holes in it too but seems the best answer.

If you listen to the McGann voice over intro he says that the Daleks captured the Master and put him on trial for the times that he's betrayed them.
By the time of the trial, the only inhabitants of Skaro are the Daleks ( the Thals had left many years earlier ).

The electronic voices are the Daleks, saying exterminate ( This came out around the same time Star Trek Voyager was on and lots of people said it sounded like a Dalek had mated with Captain Janeway ).

I think there was a problem with Terry Nations estate and they couldn't use the Dalek image, which is why you only hear them.

As for it being a trick, yes.
If you read the novel, it explains the whole essence/snake thing in more detail.
He had already used his last regeneration and his " borrowed " body is falling apart. He is losing his battle against the effects of the Cheetah planet ( survival ) and for the plan to work he must first die.
He hands himself over to the Daleks and sends a psychic message to the Doctor to take his remains back to Gallifrey. You know the rest.

I'd just put that down to the regeneration, and the problems that the anasthetic caused.

            Ian,
This talk reminds me of a question I always wanted to ask a Dr Who fan in Britain ....

It seems Dr Who 96 was generally more well recieved in Great Britian than in the United States.

This seems the opposite of what you would think it should be, considering the 96 movie is considered in many circles as "the American movie" with American style writing ... (and that's NOT a compliment)

Just wondering why that would be ?

The only thing I could come up with is Brit fans aren't as uptight and critical as American fans regarding the show.

It could just be that Who is a British institution and better loved over here.

There hadn't been any new series for 7 years and people were happy to see it back, in any form.
Also, McGann had been talked about for the role pre-cancellation, much like people wanted Brosnan for Bond during his Remington Steele days.

I'm glad this is happening. I planned on downloading the series from Youtube but I cringe at the amount of hd space those downloads take up. I didn't have a problem with Paul's portrayal of the Doctor, and I loved his costume, but the overall story plot seemed a bit sappy.

Could be the novelty thing: the movie was pretty typical for a US sci-fi series, but not a Brit one. To a UK audience it's deem somewhat new, whereas we'd seen this sort of thing so many times....

I have always been bothered by the sequence where Sly was gunned down. I always thought it was overkill. Like this is Doctor Who not Robocop!

Mike I think the TVM was better received in the UK because there was a large fan base that had been waiting fervently for it's return (kind of like Star trek the motion picture). When the series ended in 88 they had to wait 5 years for the movie. Any new who was better than none. in the states the fan base was more niche and due to the nature of the syndication I hadn't even seen survival when the TV movie was aired.
I was (like you) bothered by many parts becuase like Star wars Ep1 it seemed to be mimicing the trend in other sci fi (explisions gun fights, liquid metal effects) rather than use it's own established roots. Paul was done a huge disservice by the story that was only erased by Big finish's audios
