Matt Smith is best new Doctor ?

Was over at my nephews and he had BBC America on.
The Dr Who New Series promo spots were calling Smith the best new Doctor.

I'm not sure how to read that.
Are they saying he's the best Doctor ?
or, best NEW Doctor - which means his first season is the best first season ever ?

I personally would not agree with either statement.

I don't dislike him, but imo no way is he the best Doctor or even best NEW Doctor.

    What do you think ?

In my own opinion, the best first season of any Doctors are ......
    1. Tom Baker
    2. Christopher Eccleston
    3. David Tennant
    4. Jon Pertwee
    5. Peter Davison

I heard Pat's first season was fantastic, but I never seen it so I don't count it.

Of the new series, Smith is my favourite. He embodies the original series closer than the other two (who were great). He's not a lover, he's not super cute and charming, in fact he's kind of odd and I really like that.

On the original series it was always Pertwee, McCoy and Tom Baker.

I think Smith's regeneration story was one of the strongest. You get a sense of his character immediately. I've just finsihed his season and I thought it was extremely well done. He didn't have a story that hit the ball out of the park, like say Father's Day, but everything was a consistent A- to B+. Really great stuff for a Who fan.

I think everyone who has ever played the part has been good. Why do people have to say that one is better than another one. If one is really bad i think it would show but after that they are all just good.

I knew that campaign would tweak you Mike - it certainly has for me but since it's a quote from some entertainment infomag I discount it as typical "best ever" crap to get people to tune in if they didn't care for Tennant or Eccleston.

I am lukewarm to the whole season I was far more impressed with series 1 and 2 as first seasons for a new doctor

I think some people are kind of fickle

Many say their favorite Doctor is the current one.

I still remember back in the late 80's when people were saying McCoy was the best Doctor ever.

After McCoy's reign, this opinion changed.

During Tennant's reign people were saying he was even better than Tom Baker -- Today many people think of Tennant as an "ok" Doctor, but not the best.

I thought that Smith's first series was poor, as far as decent storytelling is concerned. They couldn't be bothered to come up with decent endings, going for "hey, why be logical if you can just make a lot of noise so people won't notice anything?!"
The last episode was good, until they decided: no, we've gone too far, we'll make the Doc return magically by "thinking of him". I can point out tons of logic errors, even when taking into account that it's SF.
This season is in the same category of Trial of a Time Lord, IMO.
And Smith's hyperactive chatter was fun..for a while. Now it just annoys.

A few things I don't like about this season.

                    1. Matt Smith acts too much like Tennant, imo
To me instead of a new Doctor he's more like a Tennant ripoff

                    2. I still can't get used to Smith's weird face -- I can't enjoy the show because his Frankenstein face constantly distracts me.

                    3. Smith is too young ...

                    4. The stories all seem like Tennant era stories that were subgrade and tossed only to be pulled out of the trash.

                    5. It seems the show (this past season) is being written for a younger crowd -- perhaps early teen or younger.

I hated his first episode, but definitely warmed up to him on the whole.

My GF liked him much quicker than Tennant, which is a surprise to me.

"Best Ever" anything is almost always subjective, so a moot point overall.

I don't know where he would rank on my personal list of Docs, but it's probably middle of the packish.

I enjoyed the season overall though. No better or worse than previous recent seasons, IMO.

The guy has really grown on me, he's closer to a classic Doctor than Tennant or Eccleston. Less manic, not a romantic, more alien and kind of odd.

I have to agree, I haven't seen any signifigant dip in quality but I did notice a 25% reduction in "Deus Ex Machina" finishes.

I almost choked on my Coffee when I read #4 - and you know since Moffet wrote most of the season I bet you aren't far off these probably were ideas rejected by RTD

Apart from a few clunkers, I thought it was the strongest overall season since the series came back. It's actually starting to feel like Doctor Who again thanks to the quirkiness and intelligent writing, not just another run of the mill action show.

I swore at the TV when Matt Smith was announced but now think he's up there with Tom Baker and Troughton. I thought he was way too young to pull the role of but he pulled it off with panache! He actually had you believing he was over 900 years old, which is a great bit of acting.

For me, his being really young is probably the most distracting thing about his series.
Everything else I listed above I could probably accept, but I just can't imagine Matt Smith was ever William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee.

I don't think i'm alone in this thinking and I think Moffat is aware of this because he seems to be putting more references to his former identities in a lot of episodes this season.
I don't think any other Doctor ever had that many former references as Smith's first season.
It's like Moffat is trying to convince everyone over and over THIS IS THE DOCTOR.

I had the same problem when Davison was first introduced but I got used to him after a few stories... Smith, I just can't - yet.

I really wish they would have got an older actor.

I know I shouldn't believe rumors but I was really hoping the John Rhys-Davies rumor as the Eleventh Doctor was true.
When it didn't happen I was let down to the point I don't think i'll ever accept Smith no matter how good he is.
It sux, but I just don't like him.
