Popular SF Movies You Don't Get

First thing that comes to mind is The Matrix. I couldn't stand that movie. Never saw the sequels, and never will.

E.T. - Loved it as a kid, but watched it a couple years ago and found it pretty terrible. Good for kids, yes, but as an adult. UGH

Star Wars prequels - Beyond horrible. I couldn't explain my disgust any better than Mr. Plinkett. Actually, his reviews make me glad they exist. If you haven't watched them, be sure to. Red Letter Media

Why do you guys think "The Abyss" is that bad? I'm just really curious... Have you seen the special edition director's cut? It really is a completely different movie. I'm not defending it just because I spent close to a year of my life working on it, or the fact that I'm a huge Cameronite... I REALLY love that film and think it's a legitimate masterpiece of cinema.

Seriously, not trying to instigate here... Just want more specific thoughts and explanations of why some here think this film is so awful.

Haven't seen the director's cut, but I love that movie, I've seen it half a dozen times already, I'm not a huge Cameronite like you tho. Sure, he's made several great movies, but I can't stand Titanic, even tho I've never seen it. And I plan never to see it. Don't ask me why, I just hate it. Could be because Leonardo DiCRAPio is in it, don't care much for him either

I'm gonna have to go against the grain on a few movies that have been listed. I Like The Abyss and I like the Fifth Element. I also Love DUNE. Thats right. I Love that movie. Funny thing is I actually only know about a handful of people that actually do. Event though thats the case I still thinks it's a great movie and one of my all time favorites.

I haven't seen in since I saw it in the theatre, but from my memory:

The first 20 minutes or so were completely riveting - the entire set-up glued me into the seat. Those scenes stand out in my mind as being some of Camaron's best work.

When the sea creatures were mysterious and hidden I thought they were intriguing, but they stopped existing in my mind when they became showy computer generated effects.

The scene with Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio playing with the morphing water spiral: As an audience member I think you're either totally in that moment with the character and amazed by this scene or you're totally not in the moment - and unfortunately for me I was not in the moment. The movie kind of stops dead for this scene - it seems like it's there for the purpose of admiring the effect - and it took me out of the story.

The movie's plot was getting away from what I thought was interesting at the beginning and starting to drag because I got the feeling that I knew exactly where it was going. The message of the film became more obvious and more predictable as it went.

The ending just killed the whole experience for me. Very abrupt and 100% deus ex machina. Also, my buddy and I couldn't help noticing Chris Eliot and kept laughing when he popped up - which also took us out of the fantasy.

I know the reworked ending is suppose to be an improvement - and based on your recommendation I'm going to check it out for sure!

It wasn’t really bad, but I thought it was pretty typical.

The director’s cut is a COMPLETELY different movie. (It’s more surprising too.)

....and being the least odious thing in the special he really stood out. Proximity effect.

I liked Dune, but didn’t think it was necessarily such a good flick. It’s really half a movie. I lucked out and had a friend who was a HUGE fanatic for the books, and she explained what was going on to me in the film. You can follow the story without reading the book, but you don’t get a sense of the importance of what’s going on.

Dune. I tried reading the book first for a school project and when I gave up on that I thought maybe I should try the movie but I couldn't sit through that either. In the end I paid my friend 10 bucks to write the essay for me because he loved the books and the movie.

Bladerunner. Again, I tried several times to watch this and it just wasn't for me.

Funny thing is, I must have seen Blade Runner at least 10 times, but never made it through to the ending.

When they used to play it on cable I used to say to myself --- THIS TIME I'M GOING TO WATCH THE WHOLE THING, but usually an hour into it I always turned the channel.

Back in the old days Boba was a joke ... Why was/is he so popular ?

1st - The animated part of the holiday special - the only thing good in the 2 hour mess was fett.
2nd - mandolorian armor is cool
3rd the mail in 3 inch I and others were salivating on the idea of the rocket firing figure even though he was less than that when we got him (I can't recall is he was the first of the mail in Sw figs I think so but I am not a hard core sw collector)
4th The 12IN Figure was released before empire and was miles ahead of the rest of the large Af line, joe like articulation, SMDM telescope eye, great gear an a plus
5th - after empire the hunt for fett was an ongoing story line in the comics which was huge back then for sw starved kids like me

Chalk that up for DUNE and BUCKAROO BANZAI for me...
...however...
BLADE RUNNER has always been a "old classic"...watched a long time ago.... keyed into the plot... and get off on it enough to recommend to others....

And it was one of those rare sci-fi movies that made me say
(even at a younger age), "Yeah, it had some themes in it that made it more
serious enough to note and palpable enough to finally make the space ships,
lasers, robots and whatever else take a backseat in a sci-fi flick."

Something that came to me after reading your post...
This feeling of bewielderment regarding Fett's huge popularity...
well, one wasn't a huge Fett fan without being a huge SW fan... the type
that was keyed into the Special, the comics, the toys (mail ins, different
lines).... so if one's interest regarding SW petered out somewhere
around Empire...i.e. without much momentum going... you were/are likely
to look at Fett as as overrated (especially if you, like all of us, are the typical
fanboy observing sci-fi culture as it went).
A little disenchantment goes a long way.

If you were a hardcore SW nut you were aware that the EMPIRE STRIKES
BACK promo via the BOBA FETT appearances in media and merch were
on fire LONG before ESB was released (or there was even a trailer)
... while I never had intense Fett fever, even I (as a hungry young
SW fan overall) was intrigued by this cool suited dude who was going to be
in the next flick.

And to a kid...a "rainbow colored" stormtrooper who we knew nothing about
was dang something else. (The Clone Troopers stuff sure took that
and ran with it!)

By the time ESB was actually out, Fett blended into the masses with me personally.

I think Fetts popularity took off with the fact he was the first mail in special figure I can think of.
