Just got done watching Sandy Collora's newest movie Hunter Prey and I totally loved it. Hunter stalks prey, hunter becomes prey, simple story, but with some interesting twists.
The story goes as follows: A race called Sidonians conquer planets all over the galaxy, kinda like the Necromongers in The Chronicles of Riddick. The Sidonians have destroyed Earth. All mankind is annihilated, except for one man, who's on a mission of revenge and wants to destroy Sidonia. The Sidonians have sent a squad to capture the human. They crash on a desolate planet and the hunt is on. Battle of the fittest.
Don't expect exotic settings, elaborate explosions or high speed space battles. The entire movie is shot on a desert like planet. The make up gets an A+, the aliens look very convincing and I couldn't help but chuckle on seeing an alien with a goatee (played by Sandy himself). Let's face it, how often do you see an alien with facial hair. The hunter helmets had a sort of Boba Fett meets the Predator feel to them. The prey helmet looks somewhat like an alien skull. The accessories (rifle, sonic gun, communicator,...) and the costumes are simple, yet effective. No over the top or exaggerated gadgets, no costumes with so many tubes going in and out you have to wonder what they're all for, nothing like that, which makes everything much more believable. The fact that the hunter suits are dirty and damaged from battle gives even more credibility to the whole movie. This is after all a race of conquerors, fighters and warmongers.
Sandy worked with Clark Bartram again, who also starred in Sandy's Batman Dead End. His look in Hunter Prey made me think of Charlton Heston in Planet of the Apes, the suit, the beard... In fact, knowing Sandy's love for POTA one could say Hunter Prey is an hommage to Planet of the Apes. The lonely human being hunted down by a race of aliens (apes). And the Sidonians do look somewhat like apes, but not a whole lot tho.
It's quite an entertaining movie with a couple of surprises and unexpected twists. Go see it if you the chance.
