The reason I like it so much is two fold. I like the episodes where they are in the devastated cities for the cool sets and, I know I am in the minority here, but I really liked the 2nd POTA movie and my favorite scene is when Brent and Nova hide out from the apes in the old subway and he finds the subway sign that tells him he is on earth in the future. The subway scene in the TV episode is similar and was probably written with the movie scene in mind.

I think the Subway one is one of the most memorable, it's certainly my favourite.

I think the reason I like the subway one so much is because the gorilla kept his word to Virdon at the end.

It made the show more credible by having the gorillas not acting like classic unthinking villians that were just plain evil.

It's too bad we didn't see more of this behavior for the gorillas in the future.

That's always been my favorite episode.

On a side note: the one thing that ALWAYS bothered me about the tv series was the BLATANT gaffe in the first few minutes of the very first episode.
There is a DOG there. Supposedly the whole reason the apes became so intelligent and plentiful was becasue of the plague that killed off all the cats & dogs on Earth which led to people taking in apes as pets. (Conquest)
