I remember in one of those "technical" Star Trek books that you had 2 choices for destruct

"Destruct-0" was a controlled destruction of a ship with pre-planted charges designed not to cause much surrounding destruction. It also said the matter/anti-matter core would be ejected safely.

"Destruct-1" was the "Death Star" type of explosion. It would destroy the barrier between the matter and anti-matter. The explosion would be big enough to destroy/damage surrounding ships and also damage a planet if they were in orbit.

So when Kirk ordered "000 destruct 0" in Trek 3 and in Let That Be Your Last Battlefield he was opting for the contained and controlled destruction of the ship (much like demolition people bringing down an old building)

I kinda watched Trek backwards as I grew up watching Next Gen first. I gotta tell you that seeing the Enterprise D go down was a little heartbreaking (despite how ugly it was). Its the ship I grew up with and I had the tech manual and knew were everything was.

The Enterprise in general is a character to me. It has a personality. I actually get goosebumps when I see it sometimes. When I saw the Enterprise E for the first time and again later in First Contact when everyone was getting beat by the Borg and the Enterprise shows up to save the day. It was awesome.

As I got older, I got in to the Original Series and love it just as much (in some cases more). So when I did see the Enterprise blow up in number 3 I was sad. Especially the look on Kirks face as they watched it from the planet. He says "My God Bones, what have I done?". I'm sure to him it was like loosing a part of himself.

I looked at it as just another plot device. Like at the end of a Bond film, Blowing up the baddy lair at movies end. In the movies they do things big to make it spectacular. With the Enterprize as the center of the explosion you add that much more to the importance of the blast.
