What did you think of the DESTRUCTION OF THE ENTERPRISE in SFS

Today, we say cool SFX ....

But back in the day when you were watching Star Trek 3 The Search for Spock for the first time and seen the destruction of the Enterprise, what did you think when the movie ended ?

I know a lot of people who were furious and treated it like a classic character's death.

Me, personally it didn't bug me.

I think because deep in my subconscious mind I never really accepted the movie refit Enterprise as the "real" Enterprise.

The refit was just too unlike the classic Enterprise that I never actually believed they were the same vessel.

What was your first reaction ?

Were you mad ? ... shocked ? ... indifferent ?

Surprised and Shocked.I remember thinking at the time that was the end of Trek cause without the enterprise it just wouldn't be star trek anymore.

I saw it with my mom and didnt think much. I wasnt much into Star Trek.

Later I thought it was a nice effect. I liked all teh little panels flying up and it not being atomized. but hey by then i had already seen teh Daeth Star explode a few times.

I never accepted it as teh real enterprise. that was just a silly idea. I mean the thing is much larger.

They should have started teh A, b, c, thing right then. with TMP.

I felt the same way. If I had seen them destroy the technicolor Enterprise that I grew up loving I would have been really upset but that wasn't "my" Enterprise, JOHN

I considered it very shocking because it wasn't expected. Especially after they killed off Kirk's son and the emotional way that scene plays out before hand. I think I do have to say that this is probably my favorite of all of the Star Trek movies. I thought the comedy in it was not over the top and the way the story showed you throughout that any character was not sacred, by time the Enterprise was sacrificed, I was on the edge of my seat. TMP Enterprise has always been my favorite design and to see the really cool ship that took on V'ger without a scratch go up in flames like that. Very wrenching.

I totally agree. I was actually filled with pride when they showed "A" in Voyage Home. It never occured to me they could continue the Enterprise legacy like that.

Ditto, except I was an adult when I saw anything past the first motion picture. I wasn't impressed w/ that one, so I never bothered to see the others as a teenager.

I agree. My only problem is that they have destroyed too many Enterprises too quickly. I wasn't expecting Enterprise D to be destroyed either.

I agree with both of you.......Nimoy said STIII would be that last voyage ot the "Enterprise".....Spock sacrificed himself to save the enterprise and her crew and in turn Kirk sacrificed the enterprise to save Spock.
I always liked the re-fit version of the TMP enterprise but never was crazy about the look of the enterprise D....Ron Moore always wanted to destroy the D in the series,so when he got his chance in Generations.. he did.
Now on the other hand I thought the enterprise E was iconic looking...what you would expect a future version of the original enterprise to evolve into....every movie from first contact on has threatened to destroy the E...even having Picard ram her into Shinzon's ship..but as you remember the E was being repaired at the end of nemesis...showing us she will continue on with the legend of the original enterprise.

I always HATED the Enterprise D

The design was just not "cool"

When Matt Jefferies designed the original Enterprise he said his inspiration was a combination of possible true life functionality mixed with "hot rod looks"

I don't see any "hot rod looks" in the Enterprise D

Back in the 80's I had a friend who compared the different Enterprises to automakers ... He said the 1701 was a Ford, the 1701 refit was a Chevy and the Enterprise D was a Japanese import
Back in the 80's, his comparison actually made a little sense

It was painful.

I still remember watching the hull burning and disintegrating and feeling like I was watching someone pour acid on my friend's arm.

The movie Enterprise has always been my favorite -- nostalgic and fond as I am for the original, I thought I thought the movie version streamlined the original in a way that made it look sleeker and more powerful but not overdone (unlike the NCC-1701-E, which always looks to me like it was designed by a committee to incorporate each member's "cool" ideas, even if they didn't go together).

I go back and forth on whether STII or STIII is my favorite . . .
