    American Doctor Who coming ???

As a follow up to the Torchwood thread I read this on some of the Torchwood articles

Tranter might try to reboot “Doctor Who” for U.S. audiences while departing “Doctor Who” star David Tennant stars in NBC’s pilot “Rex Is Not Your Lawyer.” “Torchwood” (which is an anagram of “Doctor Who”) debuted in 2006 on BBC 3 and set ratings records, then was moved to BBC 1. Russell also reinvented “Doctor Who” in 2003 and was writer-creator of the series “Queer as Folk.”

Uhhhh, an American Doctor Who series ?

You know, strange as it seems for me to say this, I think it could work if handled correctly.

First thing there must be NO references to the UK series ...
The show should start at Doctor no.1 and go on from there.

Time Lords should not be called Time Lords -- it's too British sounding.
Perhaps call them Time Keepers or Time Masters.

The TARDIS (of course) could not be a police box.
Funny thing is, the best disguise to fit into today's American society would be a porta-pottie
Porta-potties are so common, nobody would even think twice about seeing one almost anywhere.

Finally, the Doctor must remain the brainy no-guns element of the show.

I really think an American Dr Who series could work if they do it right.

Yes, then they could call it Doctor Poo to avoid tarnishing the name of the franchise

If you had to do an American relaunch (which I have no faith in) I think the perfect substitue for the Police Box would be an armoir:

If it was in a building, few people would think twice.

I am enough of a snob I don't want a reimagined Doctor who any more than I wanted a reimagined Star trek

Torchwood I can almost see if they make it an American branch or expansion of Torchwood UK going global, maybe have Captain Jack pop in now & again.

Doctor Who is a Brit show, end of story. The charm, the sensibilities, all stem from him being done in Britain. Won't work anymore than the time they tried to Americanize Tarzan. Also, I think at this point Doctor Who is more established in the states than it was when Fox tried it before. Back then, Who was more of a cult series, shown here on Saturday mornings and late evenings on PBS stations. Now with BBC America, DVDs, media, toys, etc. I think a lot more people know who Who is. BBC America is one of the more successful cable channels.

I am too, but Star Trek was different (than what I was thinking for American Dr Who)

Star Trek was not actually a reboot ... Star Trek is in the continuity of the series and all the movies.
It basically is rewriting history in the Star Trek universe.

For Yank Who, I wouldn't want to see that ...
I'm talking about a completely unrelated show using some of the Dr Who ideas.

My figuring is even if it's a bomb, it wouldn't ruin the UK series

Kind of like the Peter Cushing Dalek movies --- which if i'm remembering correctly were also American produced.

Wasn't the Master's tardis at some point an armoir? It may have just been in a portion of an episode.

note American TARDIS also has hand written OUT OF ORDER sign taped on the front (not shown)

actually it was produced by a UK firm for their audience and did well enough it was shown here a year later (dalekmania overtook the uK after the dalek invasion of earth episode aired terry nation and BBC cashed in with the films - there was no home viewing market then (the same thing today would kick off 10 different version dvd releases)
Policemen Tom campbel from the 2nd film is actually the same actor as Donna's grandpa in End of Time (Bernard Cribbins)

                    Hmmmm....

I like the Coke machine.... but I really don't like the idea of an American series. (Again.) To me, the premise is flawed: "people love the show, and have for decades, so.... what would make it better? A complete redo! With trendy actors and... and.... I know! We'll make 'em angry all the time!"

Anything foreign that has a hint of succes needs to be Americanized... lack of respect for the original if you ask me

we don't need an american version. BBC is producing Who still and the show is successful. Fox already tried Who in the 90's and it didn't get picked up....er, I think that was Fox anyway.
