Glad you liked the new movie Mike, or sort of liked it anyway
5 definitely had it's moments, but it's a hard movie for me to like..:

BEST parts were the campfire scenes. Seeing the 'trio' sitting around the fire was easily one of the most poignant scenes between ANY of the characters, and would be something Next Gen would build into it's episodes (Picard/Wesley Crusher, Geordi/Data, etc..). If the whole movie had more of that AND a reasonable story.., it would have been a wonderful treat..

WORST parts were how embarrassingly inane they treated the secondary characters.. Scotty, Uhura, Sulu, Chekov..??? C'mon! There were some excellent opportunities to really do something more with these characters.., but they ended up looking like hapless buffoons.

No wonder they didn't respect Shatner much..

I think of this outing primarily as a wasted opportunity..

        Ah yes...

        "Row row.... row your.... boat
        Gently down... the... stream
        Merrily merrily... merr-ily....... merr-ily
        Life is... but... a... dream"

"But Captain, life is not a dream."

        Pure Shakespeare.

          I'm sorry...but with all due respect...that's the scene I hated the most...lol.

Three old dudes...with no chicks around...singing, "row, row your boat"...I'm sorry...but that was corny...and a little bit creepy to say the least...it was definitely a rolling of the eyes kinda moment...

I can't help it, ... when I seen Spock and Uhura kissing it just makes me feel uncomfortable ... Growing up with these characters so long seeing them "together" in this movie almost seems like incest.

Like I said, to each his own and if you guys like it fine ... I thought the movie was watchable but not much more then that.
I wasn't aware that Nimoy's Spock and Nichols' Uhura were related...

Well, either can be described as having "pointy" protuberances.

And...I will maintain that I am proud of you for having watched it.

It would have been cool if you liked it as much as I did, but I value your honest opinion and I could have never had that if you never saw it.

Personally I loved it! The writers did a great job of showing the true essence of the characters regardless of the standard "time travel plot device" that ALL Trek movies are known for.

It really made me appreciate the EMCE toys even better. Why that is I'm not exactly sure but my best guess would be that after the new film and getting a different and deeper look at the characters I think the actors really got them (the characters) just like the original Mego sculptors captured the essences of the characters more so than the actors.

Plus it was FUN. More movies need that element more so than another couple million dollars or cg shots.

I think I'm bound to enjoy the sequels more than the STAR TREK movie itself--
I like the characters, but not enough not to see them on a mission together from start to finish as opposed to the "formation of the crew" that this
film was. Maybe if the plot for the movie was more interesting,
but, as many will admit, the plot was pretty thin...I wouldn't have minded
a standard, uncomplicated plot...but it just seemed too trite even by
                        THOSE standards.

I'm glad you got a chance to see it, Mike. I got the DVD set for Xmas and after seeing the deleted scenes, I wish they had left those in the movie. The Klingons holding the Romulans prisoner explained what they were doing for 20 years waiting for Spock. The Spock/Uhura thing bothered me for the reason that there didn't seem to be an explanation for it. If the timeline was altered When Kirk was born, that shouldn't have affected Spock choosing logic over emotions as a child when he grew up. The change would be when he reached Starfleet. Maybe seeing Uhura in his class made him want have emotions?

On a side note, if anyone has geeked out like me and read the novel adaptations of the ST movies, JM Dillard's take on The Final Frontier makes you wish they filmed the adaptation instead. She gives Sulu, Chekov, Uhura, and Scotty a chance to shine and writes scenes showing all of their "secret pains." The Klingons are smart and figure out a way to convert their shields to go into the barrier, etc. I recommend reading that, even if you hate the movie. It is good Star Trek.
                          It's all good!

I have to agree with you on a few points Mike. The Uhura/Spock thing did bother me. It seemed grossly out of character for Spock, and in a way undermined Quinto's great performance. He really channeled Nimoy in all other scenes, but then they did that?

But that's my only real gripe about the movie. I hope they tone that down, and have Spock sink into his purely logical state as the films progress. It will make him seem even more tragic.

I like Star Trek V too. I love the campfire scene. It's three old friends being goofy around each other, which friends do. The Sybok business is a little weird, but I think a lot of the hatred for this movie is because Rodenberry riled up the fans against it when it was released. He HATED it. Its the worst of the classic crew movies (even though TMP is far more boring, it's a better movie, technically), but I'll still watch it.

Has anyone read the making of Star Trek V ? Its written by Shatners Daughter. The last thing he says in the book is it is the masterpiece of his artistic carrer.

                              Poor Shat.

The new one? I didnt like it. I should watch it again. First time I saw Dawn of the Dead remake I didnt like it either.

I hope they calm down a bit . Im am not used to the seizure inducing zoom zoom of todays sci fi.

Star Trek 5 was coming off the heals of The Voyage Home ... The humor in 5 was directly put in because of the popularity of Trek 4's humor.

If the humor was left out of 5 I think the movie would have come up even more flat than the final result.

It had bad special effects and a weak story.
If anything the humor made it slightly more palatable.

None of this was Shatner's fault, imo.
He was not allowed to use the original script (because it was too expensive to produce)
Shatner was given a turd, sprayed perfume on it and the result was still a turd.

Nimoy (Star Trek 3 and 4) had the luxury of spending money.
If not, those movies would have been crap too.
