Ive just watched it for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised. I did not buy the Uhura making out with Spock. Chris Pine was better than I thought. Sulu looked all wrong to me, but look forward to the next one.

I quite liked the new Trek movie for the most part.

HATED, HATED, the Spock/Uhura thing. I leaned over to my wife while watching it at the drive in and said:"WHY"?????

Wasn't fond of the fellow playing Kirk either but that's it really. I KNEW Syler would make a good Spock. I wasn't disappointed. Too bad Heroes blows now.

If not, those movies would have been crap too.
You gotta wonder why coming off the most successful of the films he got his
          budget cut.

Because the execs at paramount figured they could make more money by taking advantage of a "captive" audience on the heels of a successful movie.......so they cut the budget on special effects and more focused screen writing/adapting....I hope the next film doesn't have this problem.

I remember the commentary by Nimoy for 3 and him talking about how the budget was limited and how it affected the scenes like Spock's rebirth scenes.

Nimoy throught the backdrop on the set looked really fake and decided to throw the background out of focus in most shots.

And about the future new Trek movies, the original Trek movies were made to take advantage of the people's nostalgia and love for the original Trek cast.

With these new Trek movies, they are in the process and establishing a new cast and they would be fools to not go bigger after the success of the first one.

that's because Hollywood still thinks all asians look the same.
Sulu is supposed to be japanese. John Cho is Korean (actually born in South Korea). Koreans can pass for southern Chinese but not for Japanese the facial features are too different.
It's almost as bad as George Takei being cast as a Vietnamese in Green Berets or Soon-Tek Oh (a Korean) as the VN col in Missing in action 2 (he also played vietnamese in magnum)

Which is why ST V works till about halfway through when the effects need to carry the weight of the shots

I got this DVD for X-Mas and just watched it yesterday. I really enjoyed it. I was able to get in to the new portrayals and quickly forgot about William Shatner as soon as Chris Pine hit the screen. The essence of Kirk was still there and considering this is an alternate timeline made it easy to accept the reboot for me. Nicely done! Great popcorn flick IMO! Looking forward to the next one...and I've NEVER been excited about seeing TOS movies when they 1st hit the theatre so that's saying something right there.

There is an extra on the DVD where JJ Abrams says that he called George Takai and asked him his thoughts on casting John Cho. Apparently George said OK.
                          It's all good!

even if that is true he was probably judging on the acting ability of Cho which is actually very good. I was commenting on why fans may not have liken him as much - he simply doesn't look japanese

I personally think the guy from Lost, Daniel Dae Kim (Jin Kwon) would have been a better fit.
