I really enjoyed the last movie although the Trekkie in me wonders how much of TOS feel was kept in. It was really an action movie without the philosophical underpinnings.
However, considering the franchise was dead in the water, they probably had to go this route to kickstart things. I'm interested to see where they go from here.Comment

Capt. Kirk: "Is there anyone on this ship, who even remotely, looks like Satan?"
Mr. Spock: "I am not aware of anyone who fits that description, Captain"
Capt. Kirk: "No, Mr. Spock, I didn't think you would be"Comment

I'll go in a little better detail of some of the stuff I did and didn't like.
Did not like ....
I did not like the Romulan baddy ... To be honest, I always hated any Romulan's that were not on the classic series.
This Romulan gave this movie a Star Trek Nemisis feel.
There were a few totally unbelievable things in this movie I just could not accept -- including Kirk becoming Captain of the Enterprise (in the conclusion) so fast.
Did not like the Uhura and Spock thing ...
Some stuff I did like .......
The crew were good choices ... I especially liked the new Chekov.
The Enterprise is still weird looking, but I got used to it.
Sarak seem to be a bit more "cool" ... The old Sarak (classic series) was a bit of an jerk.
Like I said, all in all not bad ..... But for me personally, the big killer was having a Romulan as the main baddy ... I just think Romulans are sooooooo boring."Thats the ticket laddie"Comment

For the people who wonder why I would put Star Trek 5 above it, here is my reason.
Star Trek 5 was not the greatest Star Trek movie ever, but it did star the entire original crew ... That alone makes it better than any Next Gen movie.
They could have had Trek-5 being them just singing around the campfire for 2 hours and I still would rate it higher than anything done after 1991.
I consider Star Trek 5 to be the Spock's Brain of the movie series --- a guilty pleasure of mine that EVERYONE hates but I don't ...Comment

I don't hate 5, I think it had it's moments. The ending was just a big let down.
Glad you liked the new movie Mike, or sort of liked it anywayComment

Coming from you Mike, this is like the ST movie getting an Academy Award!
Glad you found some good stuff in there.
I agree, it has its weak points, too.
I disliked the Spock/Uhura love story. Totally inappropriate.
The bad guys weren't all that impressive.
Yes, Kirk "appropriated" the Enterprise way too fast.
Yes, I would have prefered a more vintage looking Enterprise.
Nothing that hasn't been said before, but it was a fun movie.
Now if only they stop Spock shagging everything that moves, I'm cool with it!
As far as ST 5: sorry, but that was just Shatner's shrine to himself.
It was a poor attempt at slapstick comedy.
Shatner needs to realize this: get someone competent in the director's chair.Last edited by Gorn Captain; Dec 26, '09, 12:21 PM..

Star trek 5 was like watching a really, really, really bad version of who mourns for apollo!!!
It was complete Shat...-...ner crapolla.
Sybok??? spocks evil half brother what kind of crap was that!!!
I would rather watch the entire run of TNG than sit through 5 again,I hate TNG so that says it all.“When you say “It’s hard”, it actually means “I’m not strong enough to fight for it”. Stop saying its hard. Think positive!”Comment

I liked the new one a lot - it was fun, exactly what I wanted from it. The new cast doesn't have the chemistry of the old one, but that's an impossible thing to re-create.
Of course my opinion probably doesn't mean much because the only ones I liked before were Wrath of Khan and IV (which was goofy, but fun). I liked the old show, but never got into anything else, including Next Gen.Comment

Knowing how big a Trek Fan you are, I felt like you would have missed out. Whether you loved it or not would have been immaterial. As a Trek Fan you needed to see this and you did.
Hats off to you.Comment

Now that you've seen it Mike...I challenge you to point ALL the references to both Star Trek:TOS, and the Trek Movies.
Here's just one: What is the name of the Chief medical Officer that's killed on Deck 7? And why is that important?
And there's sooooooo many more!sigpicComment

They can have 2000 classic series references for fan service, but having Spock and Uhura have the hots for eachother totally cancels out a lot of good things for me.
I can't help it, ... when I seen Spock and Uhura kissing it just makes me feel uncomfortable ... Growing up with these characters so long seeing them "together" in this movie almost seems like incest.
Like I said, to each his own and if you guys like it fine ... I thought the movie was watchable but not much more then that.Comment
