without the "it's good or It stinks" argument, which went on for several pages when the film was released, can those who bought it in various versions rate the release iteself (which one you got, bonus pack ins, special pacakges, and especially the bonus features)

this will help everyone who wants to buy it pick the best choice for themselves

Rented this movie last night. I never saw it in theaters, because I wasn't ready to believe anyone could possibly honor such iconic characters with new actors. I was tired of the whole Trek genre as well. And yes I did always place Trek in it's own genre, away from traditional science fiction. After the 60's classic, I felt like Star Trek collapsed on it's own ideology of harmony amongst cultures and became virtually a parody of it's 60's roots. For myself the Star Trek world became something to poke fun at. Women officers walking about wearing incredibly form fitting, almost suffocating, tights while the male officers acted as if all was normal, spewing poetic philosophy about the meaning of life. "Good morning Officer Hanson. Would you mind turning down the air on the bridge just a little further so my nipples can punch through this suit?"

It became a complete contradiction to it's base philosophy and developed into the ultimate nerd orgasm. William Shatner was right by this point when he told fans to "get a life". Star Trek had become an exhausted theme that was bubbling with embrassingly bad scripts and terrible writing, all designed to keep selling toys. It was no surprise when the movies quit making money and shut down for an extended period of years.

So it was with this perspective that I rented this movie and expected to witness the last gasp of a property Paramount had p*ssed down the drain...boy was I surprised. I once heard a critic say this movie was made for those who had grown to hate Star Trek... HE WAS RIGHT! This movie was not only good, it was a long awaited gift of fresh air from fans like myself who loved the original show. The acting was superb. These characters were developed and came together in a logical fashion without over exploiting the idea of their fate. Kirk wasn't born a hero. He was transformed into a hero through the lessons of his own loss and failures. More importantly he was able to succeed once someone offered their hand to say, "I'll give you your chance." Those scant few individuals would become the support group by which Kirk would evolve into the hero we know him to be. And only through that belief does Kirk ever reach his full potential. It's a great lesson in life - No one goes it alone. No man is an island. Your are defined by those you keep company with. Kirk was made a hero by those who believed in him. This is a great movie and if you ever grew tired of Star Trek like I did, I suggest you abandon those feelings and give this a shot. You won't be sorry.

I bought the Blu-Ray Enterprise model $24.99 at Target (I did hear it was the same as the Best Buy Canada). I haven't had a chance to watch it yet but did see it in the movies. I'm not a big league sci-fi fan but loved the movie. My kids who have never seen a single Star Trek episode loved the movie.

I'm a bit of a sucker for the special package editions but can't wait to look at it again.

As a side note, I just realized that the actor who plays Sulu is the same actor in Flash Forward.

There is a battle sequence in the film at 47.42. At this time R2 D2 flies across the screen, you will probably have to do frame advance to see it.

I bought the two disc set. It's well worth the extra cost as it includes a LOT of stuff that was cut from the movie, a blooper film, and some other neat stuff. Without wading into the good/stinks issue, I think a lot of stuff in the added scenes part of the bonus disc really help the storyline of the regular movie. I would recommend it for this, if nothing else. There is a set above this one that includes a Enterprise shaped disc holder...otherwise I believe it has the same features as the 2 disc set (I think the blue ray version is three discs...but has the same content.).

                        Hope this helps!?

Apparently the Bad Robot guys (Abrams and his flunkies) have about a zillion little inside jokes they insert into their films."Wheres R2D2 ?"is one of them.
