Star trek IV joke that I just realized doesn't match continuity

If someone has mentioned this before, I hadn't noticed.

At the beginning of Star Trek IV on the Bird of Prey. McCoy wants to have a talk with Spock about his coming back from the dead. Spock says that he can't describe it for him without a common frame of reference to which McCoy grumbles and responds that he would have to die and come back in order to have a conversation.

Well, didn't McCoy die in the "Shore Leave" when he was gutted by the black knight that charged him and the planets "keeper" brings him back out at the end alive?

    Yeah, I'm a geek.
    It's all good!

I had always thought he was taken away before he dies and replaced with the fake McCoy. Remember he said "Possibly because no one has died..."

I always saw it as that he was revived somehow. Was there ever an actual comment that he was replaced before he got jousted? The animated series follow-up has McCoy, Kirk and Spock figuring out a way to get inside the planet and they mention him losing to the Knight.

Fascinating. I wonder if continuity considers the "Shore Leave" incident as an actual death? I guess by his comment in ST4 that he was replaced by a duplicate, but I must admit that I always thought he was killed and revived as well. Now I must watch Shore Leave again.

                  LOL
Capt. Kirk: "Is there anyone on this ship, who even remotely, looks like Satan?"
Mr. Spock: "I am not aware of anyone who fits that description, Captain"
Capt. Kirk: "No, Mr. Spock, I didn't think you would be"

Star trek ignores it's own continuity constantly by the standard of the TNG episode Reilcs where scotty thinks Kirk is there to save him and the Generations film 18 months later where scotty is there for Kirk's loss in the 1701-b, this is a nit pick one (also Mccoy didn't really die anyway in the story)

I know but what are they going to do? Getting those two back must have been hard enough considering how much they hated Shatner and no one else would do it.

                          In relics sScotty was senile.

I dont know its like listening to the producers of the old Dr Who. They said teh audience at the time was very forgiving.

I like teh sound of that.

( Except for Enterprise and it's spin off Trek 2009, does that mean Enterprise happened in a different universe too? please YES. . .)

I think in regards to Relics, Scotty just spent 70 years in a transporter beam so he was probably pretty disoriented when they brought him out. Add to that, characters like Jim Kirk are pretty tough to kill and keep them dead. After seeing Spock die and come back, I'm sure its not impossible for Kirk to do the same. And at the end of Generations he came out of the Nexus (only to die all over again).
