Just because it is during WWII doesn't mean they should mess with a his costume. To me that would be like putting Supes in a space suit because he came from another planet. If they were to change his appearance then they might as well go with Will Smith and change him all the way around.
While they do need to pull in more than comic geeks for the movie to be a hit the main percentage will be comic fans or at least people who know who Cap is and is not.

If you read The Ultimates....he wears the Army Fatigues for the 40's which looks perfect for the time.....and when he's revived in the modern times he has an updated suit of his classic look......remember Hollywood wants to bring in the NON superhero audience in. that's how movie become blockbusters...not just bringing in the the hardcore fans.

I have an Ultimate 40's Cap figure that marvel put out a few years ago and and it's off the hook!! If they go that route for Cap in the 40's I'll be a Happy man......

Yes...that would be the best approach.

Start him with an old school look in WWII...then modernize him in the present.

one thing abotu a buff choice - Cap never looked overly huge but was well defined and since he begins the program as an exeptionally underdevloped person (which cgi will allow them to back create off whoever they cast) an athtletic build on a person of about 6'1 would be correct for the character's history. Sadly of big names the people who might most fit the build can't act (and Cena can't act outside of wrestling THE MARINE was awful). For those who want an american I doubt it. it's probably be an aussie or a uk. unlike 20 years ago when a brit or hong kong actor speaking as an american sounded like Jim Kirk or John wayne, Most of them have heard american accents on tv shows their whole lives and are good at puting on the american accent now (I offer as examples Damian lewis, Colin ferrell, Hugh jackman, Hugh Laurie, Guy Pierce, and Russel crowe and there are probably many more it never ceases to amaze me how many actors have a aussie or UK accesnt). half of the leads in band of brothers are UK born and their accents are perfectly hidden

as for costume I want to see cap's chain mail on film finally - the serial had a cotton jumpsuit, Reb brown had spandex, and sallinger had that awful latex. I kind of like the ww2 jumpjacket inspired look from ultimates but I want the look that he had for over 50years

heck odds are it'll be channning tatum he seems to be the it boy in hollywood right now

Ive never actually seen that photo before. Its ok , but the capn needs to be the traditional suit we all know.

Yeah, I want the winged mask, traditional costumed look too. As for how "buff" the guy is, I always preferred the way Kirby drew him...tough and stealy more than overly muscle bound.

While that outfit may be in line with a WWII look I've always hated that look. It's just not Captain America to me. I like the original outfit and it's been his trademark for decades. Sure he shouldn't be overly buff because he has to be agile plus he's a master of all fighting styles but then again he is the super soldier so maybe somewhere in between.
