Uhm...Excalibur doesn't need to be redone. That is a timeless classic. Jeez. Singer is hard up for new material isn't he? I think the Superman flop hit his career pretty hard.

I'm going to be remaking James Cameron's newest movie Avatar BEFORE its release.

There are also rumours of his return to the X-Men franchise.

I think the smartest thing he could do is go off and pull a "Schumacher"... a small film like Phone Booth with a bankable star and enough mainstream appeal that is guaranteed to make money and restore his reputation as a director.

Most folks forget that this is the guy did The Usual Suspects. He needs to go off with Kevin Spacey and a HiDef Video Camera and shoot something low budget with a high concept and a marketable payoff.

Singer usually has 3 or 4 things in development, whichever gets greenlit first is his next project.

Don't forget he is exec producer for House on fox so anything he does is for himself more than the money. Usual suspects is his best work

I loved excalibur but it cvertainly doesn't need to be redone (it's based on a stage play anyway so massive effects shots can't improve it) the only think in his favor is the glut of uk and aussie actors who wouldn't have to mask their accents to play in it

Am I the only person who thinks Singer should just leave comics alone - like - for the rest of his life?

Usual Suspects was well done, and had a great script - everything else he's done left me completely underwhelmed. His movies are far from the worst, but they're also far from great. To me he just doesn't seem to get what makes superheroes exciting.

While it was not a major blockbuster...it was hardly a flop...it made some money...

^^^ It flopped in the sense that it did not generate any interest in a sequel from Warner Bros.

and that any movie now has to make dpuble our triple it productiln cost to be considered a success. it didn't meet those standards. 50% return on cost is bad for that kind of budget.

True...but there still will be another Superman move...sequel or complete reboot...it doesn't really matter...you can't stop the power of Superman.

I agree with Hector. I actually liked SR....not the best Supes movie by any means but certainly not the worst either....anyone remember Quest for Peace?
actually SR was a good concept and had great nostalgic appeal with tying into the original Donner flicks but the movie was just too talky and slow paced to be a huge blockbuster. Superman needs an opponent he can have knock down, drag out fights in the streets and skies of Metropolis....anyway, this thread digresses.....I like Bryan Singer, the first 2 Xmen movies were really good.
As far as an Excalibur remake....I agree, enough already with remaking classics, the movie was great on it's own and does not need a makeover.....

I've beat this horse to death, but I will say again that I really like Superman Returns for what it is. BUT, it should have never been what it is. It's another case of Warners giving the direct too much leeway, just like they did with Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher on their second Batman films. Singer's love letter to Donner and Reeve struck a cord with me, but a little bit of that goes a long way for the general public. And lack of a real threat, the Saga of the Super-Son, and another Lex land grab scheme doomed the flick to "bleh" in most folks' eyes.

It's a shame too, because now, I'd say we'll see almost NO influence from the Reeve films in the next movie. Not even the Williams score. They are now radioactive by association with Returns. Warners will want a clean break. Maybe revive the Fleischer or George Reeves themes.

Singer does seem to be floundering, but most directors go through this. He'll get on the right project soon enough.
