Best Fantasy/Sci Fi Movie You Have Seen

There may be hundreds of good ones. Post your thoughts about what makes a good sci fi/fantasy movie. Can good visual effects really make up for a bad story? your thoughts....

For most people, yes. Folks want spectacle and action. Me; I like the underlying ideas in a flick. The weirder the better. Which is why I love so many old 50's b-movies.

Picking a best is durned near impossible for me. There are so many good ones, and so many that were good for different reasons. Sometimes they give you something you can wrap your head around, sometimes a weird idea, or neat characters. If I had to pick I'd go with "Rock and Rule," since it's my all time favourite film.

Of course, it's Planet of the Apes. It's been 40 years since its first showing, but the movie still packs a punch. It was beyond its time and is a true classic. I still feel chills down my spine when I see the Hunt Leader on horseback.

Highlander movie was a very inventive story with good acting. Just like Jessica said Planet of the Apes was great but the one that gave me the "awe" affect was Star Wars. It had everything when I was a kid.

                1) Planet of the Apes - Great Story, works on countless social commentary/literary/visual levels
                2) 2001 - Great Vision, boundless imagination used, if a tad slow in execution..
                3) Star Trek TMP - Only movie in franchise to branch out with a serious, far-reaching '70s concept (before the '80s movies played it safer..)
                4) Star Wars ('New Hope') - The Killer Blockbuster heralding/celebrating all saturday morning films, but with innovative style and effects.. (remember this was 1977)
                5) Empire Strikes Back - How often do you improve on the first..? This one did, with great subtle acting, excellent momentum.

                OK, talk amongst yourselves..

For best visuals I would say Logan's Run or the Time Machine (1960)

It's a toss up between Star Trek 2...and the NEW Star Trek.

Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope. I won't argue the greatness of Empire but Episode 4 is my favorite movie period.
