Nimoy comments on Karl Urban as McCoy

Here's a quote from Nimoy on how he felt seeing Karl Urban as McCoy:

"When Karl Urban introduced himself as Leonard McCoy and shook hands with Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, I burst into tears. Karl's performance is so moving, touching and powerful that I think DeForest Kelley would be smiling, and maybe in tears as well".

Soppy old sod. Isn't it strange how emotional people get as they get older.

Must be a surreal experience to say the least.

And this ain't no fan-made Internet dealie---it's like a HUGE finessed, successful flick.

I have never heard one bad word about De Kelly, so I'm betting Nimoy's comment was totally genuine. Why single that performance out otherwise. Urban seemed almost possessed by Kelly's ghost. He was great.

McCoy was always my favourite. I always thought his personality was crucial to the dynamics of the Enterprise, and hugely underrated compared to Spock and Kirk's limelight. Doesn't make much sense for the Doctor to be hanging out on the Bridge all the time, but you can see how a maverick like Kirk would allow it given his friendship with McCoy.

Urban nailed it. Just the right amount of homage. Add a pinch of originality, flesh out the back story a bit and voila!

                    Now that's class!!!
                    Nimoy is awesome.
I don't care if you hate Pine as kirk or not the movie itself is worth it just to watch urbans performance as bones.
“When you say “It’s hard”, it actually means “I’m not strong enough to fight for it”. Stop saying its hard. Think positive!”

When Urban shook hands with Pine and introduced himself as "Leonard McCoy", the audience I saw the film with burst into enthusiastic applause... and I was probably the loudest.

Karl did an incredible job, and a BIG part of my enjoyment of that film came from watching his performance.

Urban is a kick *** actor to begin with. so any good role will really do it for him. His Eomer in LOTR was beyond what I expected from the character.

This would never happen in a cinema in the UK. If someone started cheering and clapping everyone would think they had gone nuts and they would be thrown out of the cinema.

That's too bad. When an audience reacts together, it makes going to the theater all the more worthwhile. My Trek audience did the same thing when Bones appeared, and when every other cool old Trek reference was made.

Very poignant comments by a wonderfully appreciative and emotional Mr. Nimoy.

Yeah, us older guys get like that. It's totally believable that anyone would feel that way.., having an young, established actor humbly try to live up to the 'ethos' of who was a very near/dear friend and fellow actor like Dee was to Leonard so many years ago..

Paying homage after ALL the years, ALL the shows/movies, ALL the con appearances, everything for over 40 years.

Not to mention just how warm, dear and special DeForest was to everyone he was around, according to everyone else in the cast. It's like saying "your dear friend's beloved role is in my hands and I'll take good care of it.."

It would have choked me up.. Thanks for posting this thread.
