    Sci Fi Alien Races

I was just thinking about Behind the Planet of the Apes which I posted about.

On Star Trek we had Kirk, Sulu and Uhura on the Enterprise. 3 Flavors of Humans so to speak. Vulcans, on TOS however were largely the same looking, caucasian based race. Tim Russ commented on Voyager that he thought all Vulcans should be Black. But that was later.

So I was thinking that Apes had Chimpanzees, Gorillas and Orangutans representing 3 types of the Ape race.

Are there any other movies that show an "Alien" Race with multiple sub-races/types?

I can't think of any, but it is 3:30am.

I just thought I'd throw this out there. Another distinction for Apes perhaps. And if you have an example does it pre-date or post-date the Apes series?

I think Trek, until Tuvok, pretty much treated all races as the Same... except I understand that Andorians were split into at least 2 types on Enterprise. I never really watched DS9, Voyager or Enterprise so there may be other examples there too.

Thought this was interesting. I know a lower budget production may not have the resources to do multiple types of a Alien and that if the Aliens were not developed a lot, they would not have a need to do it either, but how about Babylon 5?

I didn't watch it either but they had a LOT of Aliens I think. Were all the Aliens of a given race pretty much the same?

Does this post make sense? I'm going to bed now, see you all later perhaps.

There were the black/white and white/black guys on Trek. Does that count?

      Hmmmm....

Aliens in sci-fi are usually one beat beings: they tend to embody one ideal, philosophy or perspective. Unless there's a rebellion. Then they get two. Physicly they tend to all look the same as well. And their worlds tend to embody on geological feature.

I've always felt this shortchanged aliens. Although in some cases you could make an argument FOR it: an older race could have become homogenous over the centuries. (Humans would still have a lot of differences since we're a relatively new species.) Wars could have eliminted competitors, or alien physionomy could have created a homogenous race.

Mostly I think it's hasty schedules and low budgets.

Yes, grey and/or blue. I posted that on the Thelin thread. But that was a Filmation error apparently and then picked up by Enterprise which, well, was later...

But yes, they count now and they are Post TOS. Thanks.

I think Tbolt was talking about the Enterprise episode that showed the albino race on Andoria called the Aenars (Enars....whatever?). That would give us blue (in varying shades) grey, and white. If you want to get really picky you could count the Andorians with the antennas out the back top of their heads (Like Megos, or Shras) as one race, while the others, with the forward mounted antenna (like Shran...or the Andorian Admiral in Trek 4) as another.

Same with Klingons. They were portrayed over the years by both black and white actors, so I figure you could say there was two races there.
Alos, if you like to make up your own Trek canon...you could alos divide the Klingon race into the swarthy/Earth type features, the single ridge gang from TMP, and the multi ridged ones from most other Trek movies and television....adding Mego, one could argue there is a brown lizard race as well

Probably the most racially and culturally diverse planet in all sci-fi dom would be Mongo. Everything from lion men and bird men, to regular human type folks.

                              Flash Gordon?

                              Is Mongo from Flash Gordon?

Are there more than one type of Lion Man, Bird Man etc? Or for example, do all the Lion Men look the same?

Are all the humans the same on Mongo? Are they all WASPs? All White? I have no idea. If it is Flash Gordon send me a link to a site with the races of Mongo if you know one.

                              Thanks.
