Do prequels rob us of our memories and imagination ?

I kind of agree with Scott about almost wishing nothing was made after Star Wars.

To me, the revelation of Darth being Luke's father was the start of the downturn in the whole series of movies.

It's when Lucas decided to take a nice light space fantasy movie and turn it into something he thought was deeper -- where everyone knows eachother and everyone has a specific purpose.
Gone were the old days of Han Solo just happening to be at the right place at the right time.

For me, Empire just wasn't fun.

I totally agree about Vader but our perception of him as a youth is done by two horrible actors who made him seem like a wimpy kid. Star Trek: Enterprise also destroyed my vision of odd looking federation ships fighting a Romulan empire with both having crude ships. enterprise was way too modern looking and destroyed the original concept.

For me, the prequels diminished Star Wars, especially Darth Vader. I think they botched the origin story of one of the greatest villains ever. He turned out to be an uninteresting, immature brat.

Totally agree. Could not have said it better. They mucked up Boba Fett too.

Going back to 1977 and watching Star Wars for your first time ... did anyone else think Darth Vader was a robot ?

Bare in mind, if you're too young to have not seen Star Wars on it's first run, you probably wont get why i'm asking this.

I wasn't sure what he was but he impressed me as one of the scariest villains I ever saw

The last season of Enterprise was prequel handled correct IMO, the damage of the first three seasons and all that other Berman nonsense not withstanding.

Hmmmm....

I don't think they neccessarily rob us oif our old memories; those are gonna persist no matter what. But I DO think they leave an empty feeling. They don't HAVE to; but the trend is to make a prequel that integrates whatever's CURRENTLY popular and "right" into the setting. Which doesn't usually work. How awkward was the midochlorian thing? How weird that 3P0 didn't recognize Vader in the first three films? Why didn't R2 fly on Dagobah? So.... the Stormtroopers are all Boba Fett? Does that mean Fett is as walleyed as the Troopers?

Mixing and matching like that creates mre questions than it answers. It can also confuse long term fans. (Like anyone who's tried to read a DC comic in the last 8 years....) Especially when there's an effort to tie everything together. After the new films the Star Wars galaxy seems a lot smaller, considering everything important that happened in the last 50 years happened to the same five people.

Trek has that problem too. Enterprise didn't help. I don't think the new movie does either. But the nerdly arts have come full circle: back in the 80's the older fans wanted justification for their long term affectation, comics 'aint just for kids, sci-fi deals with real issues.... and now it seems like they all wish the turnover rate was 4 years again.

After reading through this whole thread to this point, I can't help
but note that the term "It's just a movie" comes to mind very strongly.

I know most fans around here tend to take their movies/fantasy
very seriously, and that that is an admirable stance, but I don'ttake stuff
like this too seriously---

and so these "prequel" kinds of things don't "poison the well" for me
near enough as it does for many posting here (if at all)....

Am i ignorant? Maybe.

But, to finish another cliche--- it's "bliss"-like---meaning, this mindset
helps me love and enjoy things like STAR WARS the same as ever---
in spite of distractions.

I have to admit, this must be the "earliest" moment someone started disliking the saga. No, to me ESB is almost perfect. Acting was a bit better, Hoth was amazing (but you should see in in the off season for Wampa spotting), no regrets for me. Now if the Ewoks had been a bit more vicious, ROTJ would have been perfect, too. ROTJ failed in the same way Mad Max III failed: they added the "cute" factor....

I would have written him the opposite.

I would have had Annakin the model Jedi throughout both first 2 movies ... An exact copy of Luke on steriods.

In the 3rd movie he would have literally have gone crazy and turned to the dark side.
Perhaps because he had too much pressure put on him being the perfect Jedi.

It's why Annakin hates the Jedi so much.

He's not only bad, but he's also nuts.

Seeing it the very first time, I would agree with you, Mike.
My best friend and I did consider that, too.
The "wheezing" sound could also have been the sound like a train engine.
But he did move too smooth, so we decided on "creepily human" from then on....

English/American etc movies shown in Belgium theatres are dubbed, correct ?

If so, isn't it really annoying for people like you who speak English to have to watch a dubbed version in the movie theatre ?
