Star Trek review
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...Tags: None -
To me it sounded like they were let down by it. -

Yes, I read the entire review and overall the seemed to like it to me. The High points being Pine as Kirk and Quinto as Spock. You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. Hmm, the reviewer in the IGN article didnt really say he liked it....nor disliked it...It sounds like it just kind of was. I've read a few reviews now and they are usually pretty divided. Everyone seems in agreement the cast (for the most part) did a good to ok job. Some like the "fresh" look..some hate it. All seem to agree the plot itself is a miss. From comments like its a rambling mess to just plain incoherent.
I'm going to go see it, but I have a feeling its going to disappoint. I've (I think we all have by now)heard most of the story line and it just doesnt sound good. Everyone goes from cadets to command level officers overnight, Spock and Uhura are "gettin it on", the timing of everything is way off, Engineering looks like(actually it is) a sewage treatment plant....I just dont know. I hope its better than all that, but I doubt it.
Historically, Trek never had to rely on special effects to keep peoples interest. When it did try this approach it usually bombed. I think, from what I've seen, the new film is relying on special effects and everything being "different but the same" to entertain, and the core of Trek..the Human Adventure if you will...is solely lacking.
I guess we will find out for ourselves in a few weeks."Crayons taste like purple!"Comment

Like I have said before,I'm a die hard trek fan and from what I've read,seen,heard...people are going to either like this movie or not like it.Me...there's things I know I don't like and things I do.The story takes place in a parallel universe with different circumstances than the known star trek universe,so if more people don't like it than do like it you know that will be the reason given by the producers why fans have problems with the film.
Ultimately this is a Kirk and Spock story, every thing else is just there so to speak. As a young kid watching trek in it's first syndication ,it was the character of kirk that made a big impression on me and if this film can just capture half of that Kirk...Spock mojo...then it should do fine.JJ Abrams will(if the film does well)get another chance to fix his mistakes in his next attempt with star trek and that should satisfy more of the skeptics."Thats the ticket laddie"Comment

The author does make one major blunder though:
"Zachary Quinto is probably the biggest name in the film"
Oh really?
Eric Bana anyone?

Whlie his review was mixed...I certainly would say it was totally negative... the Reviewer says that they really got the Characters NAILED!!!
"So Abrams hit the jackpot with Pine and Quinto,
It is these differences between Spock and Kirk, and their complex relationship, that is at the heart of all that is best with Star Trek. Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner's portrayals of the series' most iconic characters are burnt into our collective consciousness, so for the writers, and the actors playing them, presenting them in a fresh way that avoided caricature would always be extremely difficult.
Yet scriptwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and of course Pine and Quinto who play the duo, succeed brilliantly in this aim and give the movie (and hopefully the ensuing franchise) its heart and soul. The pair are just perfectly cast. Pine looks and sounds nothing like Shatner, but gets right to the essence of Kirk's character with his combination of rough-shod charm and cocky arrogance. The actor looks like just another product of Hollywood's bland pretty-boy conveyor belt, but actually proves extremely charismatic and nails the part.
Quinto -- most famous, of course, as Sylar from Heroes -- is even better. The film truly revolves around him, with his thoughtful performance effortlessly conveying the dichotomy that makes Spock so interesting: his infuriatingly logical surface persona that hides a barely suppressed well of emotion. When Spock and Kirk, who loath each other for most of the film, are together onscreen the film comes alive. Ultimately, the key storyline of the film is how Kirk and Spock actually became friends."sigpicComment
