Attack's is basically a straight foreward comedy/homage to 50's sci fi B movies.
Burton is a major fan of Ray Harryhausen. Much of "Mars Attacks!" is a direct lift from "Earth Vs the Flying Saucers", right down to the space ship crashing into the Washington Monument. Personally, I've always loved "Mars Attacks!" and have had it on DVD for awhile now.

For some reason I don't count Mars Attacks as a Tim Burton movie.
I have no idea why, but it just doesn't feel Burtonesque and that's why I like it.
Unlike most of Burton's movies that basically rip off an old idea and change it into something unrecognizable and Burtonesque --- Mars Attacks doesn't do that.

There are a lot of Burton movies that aren't remakes of something old. Mars Attacks is pretty typical of his non-remake films. Burton get's a real bad rap here because he's remade things that mess with our age groups sense of nostalgia. Batman, Apes, Willy Wonka, etc... but he's done a lot of great and fun flicks that aren't remakes. This is certainly one of them.
