I tried to watch the old one again...and it's bad...really bad.
But if you are into cheese...then more power to you all.
It's not that bad, Hector. It's a product of it's time. If you loved it as a kid, though, you are going to probably love it more than someone who recently saw it for the first time. I can see how a newcomer might find it "cheesy". I will admit there are a few episodes that raise an eyebrow, LOL.

THAT seems like a weird move, 'cos you're gonna have TWO different versions of the show running concurrently. Unless they're trying to capitalize on the polarizing effect of the show on the old/new viewers.

Actually there are only 4 episodes left so there won't really be a new/old version, unless you are referring to the Caprica series that is supposed to be coming on soon? But that's not exactly Battlestar Galactica since I assume Battlestars will play little, if any, role in the Caprica series. Perhaps as a backdrop but not the main event.
The new BSG is basically Cylons, Battlestar Galactica and the basic plot of the survivors looking for Earth. That's about all it has in common with the original but it does stand up on it's own. I just hope the final 4 episodes answer all the questions that have arisen in my mind since the last season has started or it will end as a major disappointment.
I like the new Series and own it and the old on DVD. However, I stopped watch after the return of Pegasus episode. There something about a Military Commander male or female that allows these serving under their command to joyfully RAPE prisoners without fear of punishment, that I feel crosses the line.
I always liked the original and was sad when it was taken off the air, and then mugged, and replaced with Galactica 80. Granted I was 9 and 10 years old, but I just liked the character dynamics. Actually, while watching the movies (edited together episodes) back in the eighties I finally clued in that, despite what Larson says, Galactica was really Bonanza in space. Apollo was Adam, Starbuck was Little Joe and Hoss rolled into one, and Adama....well I dont have to tell you who Adama was. Even with the prerequisite annoying kid, and the poor soul who had to wear that goofy daggit suit, the show still meets my entertainment needs!!
Even now, I agree it's cheesy, but its a good well aged cheese that you have to get at the deli counter.....not the "gov't cheese" that Wal Mart sells!

I understand.
I just get defensive when people diss the new Galactica...so in turn...I gotta diss back on the old show.
Just taking it as a stand alone sci-fi show, I am uninterested in the re-imagined BSG. It's just not my type of show. Now calling it BSG is where I take issues with it. It could be the very same show and not be called BSG or even be called something like BSG the Next Generation. Then again I would have zero problems with it and would just be completely disinterested in it.
On a bit of a side note, I've never been impolite to fans of re-imagined show. But I have seen, and I'm talking in general here, at various sites I've lurked at rudeness, gloating and snide remarks to fans of the classic series and the show. Yes, there are of course rude fans of the classic show. But in my experience they are in the minority and the most insulting and rude fans are people who like the re-imagined show only.

Reason: typos
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

There seems to be a weird rabid-ness to a lot of 'em. I suppose it's mostly a vocal minority doing it; but they seem to be VERY vocal....

That was my problem too; the new show is just as much a product of it's time as the old; and I REALLY don't care for the gritted teeth, angry "24" style shows. Mostly 'cos that's all we've seen the last few years. Yes yes.... you're all quite angry. I get it.
That's why I'd be apprehensive about a new movie based on the old show: I think we'd get some really weird hybrid wherein everyone was really angry but sported feathered hairdoos. Or it'd become an outright "hilarious camp experience" and they'd cast Wil Ferrel in it.
I have watched the new show from the beginning and I loved the miniseries and the first season. It has gotten progressivley harder to follow since/
My wife pointed it out on friday as I watched the most recent episode everyone has sex with everyone else and it is a soap opera
maybe becuase they got a start in star trek but they should have quit after season 2. the original galactica has the luck of being cancelled before they could run out of ideas
To be honest, the original series also had some very questionable quality episodes.
I rewatched the whole DVD box, and at times, I also had to "cringe" now and then.
I still love it, and some of the episodes are very good indeed (the pilot, Gun on Ice Planet Zero, Fire in space), but the whole season was "uneven" at times.
So I'm willing to cut new BSG some slack.
Truth be told, I do sometimes wish they had distanced themselves even more from the original. It could have been a great show on its own, without the BSG connection.

Yeah, that's where my problem with the new show lies. I think they crossed the line making Starbuck a woman and that is what really ticked off the fans of the original more than anything. I'm not usually a fan of change for the sake of change (wow, the tangent I could go off on here...LOL...we won't go there) so I wasn't too happy when I heard what the plans were but when you set it apart from comparisons with the original, it's a pretty entertaining show.

OMG!! If I had been drinking milk it would be spurting through my nose!
Why am I picturing that goof Ferrell in a Viper helmet right now?

I'm finding it a bit hard to follow lately as well. I'm not sure if they're holding back on the total revelations or if they've told us pretty much everything and it's just winding down? I'm hoping more to come cuz I'm a bit confused right now. Wasn't expecting it to become "LOST".
I don't think they've run out of ideas, I think they just kind of painted themselves into a corner while intending to wrap up the series prematurely (in my opinion).

I agree but perhaps they felt the name recognition would help them and it probably did. One major problem I had with the new series is a feeling, to me, that now the chance of resurrecting the orig series is impossible but maybe not if this news clip is true?
I love the old show for its awesome design/"look", and for the nostalgic feelings that well up when I watch it. But in terms of quality of writing and compelling characters, it was no patch on Star Trek, not by a long shot. It's a goofy kid's show with some ultra-fun visuals and campy characters, IMO.
And that last season, where the heroes are stranded on Earth because the producers ran out of money -- woosh. That is some awful, awful television.
The new show is a brilliant work of true science fiction. It examines social issues and moral and philosophical questions through the lens of this imagined future reality. Plus which, the action sequences are breathtakingly bad***. Visually it doesn't have a whole heck of a lot in common with the old series, which at first disappointed me. But it's very much its own thing, and has a very convincing feel as a result of all the "normal" clothing and casual approach to the production design. I've only seen a handful of episodes, but those I've seen I think are simply awesome.
I've never understood the people who have to bash someone else's likes. There are two shows called Battlestar Galactica. No big problem. I am very sentimental to the 1978 version the same way I get emotions from seeing some of my toys from that era. That show really clicked for me for some reason. That being said, I've watched the new one on Hulu (I don't have cable) and I just cannot get my head around the whole Cylon story for the new show. They existed on Earth but then went out to the colonies and told the original Cylons how to make human looking ones. which confuses me more because when they found Earth Tyrol flashes back to remembering he was on Earth buying fruit at a stand when the planet was destroyed. Did he know he was a Cylon then. Did I miss an explanation of something? (If there is someone who watches the show more than I could explain it better?) In '78 it was easier for me to interpret: Cylons=Klingons, Galactica = Enterprise. I got that pretty quickly
>I think they crossed the line making Starbuck a woman and that is what really ticked off the fans
This was one of the things that didn't tick me off so much as it puzzled me. StarBUCK. Buck=male. It'd be like having a super macho, grizzled older cigar chompin', tough talkin', jaded, shaven headed commander played by Clint Eastwood... and his name is Princess Jane.
>Why am I picturing that goof Ferrell in a Viper helmet right now?
Don't! Just.... don't.
>It examines social issues and moral and philosophical questions through the lens of this imagined future reality.
Well.... that's kinda where a lot of the new fans lose me. It's very much grouned in contemporary isues; but it doesn't really offer any new perspective into them. Everything plays out pretty much how you'd expect.
>I just cannot get my head around the whole Cylon story for the new show.
That's part of the problem with doing a remake; you come into it with a lot of baggage. And that baggage can increase exponentially depending on how much you want to tie in with the source material.

That's where I'm getting lost. Did they really find Earth? Was it not our Earth? Or is this where they veer off from the original's storyline? I'm nervous that 4 episodes isn't going to be enough to answer all the hanging questions and end the series satisfactorally.
Are we Cylons? Were the final 5 the only Cylons on Earth? So did the (seemingly) unintelligent Centurions make the skinjobs? If so, then why are they subserviant to them and cannot speak? ["By your command"]. I'm very confused.
