It seems to me DVD vs Blue Ray and whatever - reminds me of - VHS vs Beta.

All the high tech people loved and promoted Beta, but the general mom and pop public chose VHS because the players and tapes were cheaper .. and VHS was already an established act (in the majority's mind).

I can see Blue Ray and HD staying popular with the high tech people, but as long as Walmart sells DVD's and Players for $10.00, I don't think these formats will kick in with the general masses.
DVD will be around for a long time to come but blu-ray is going more mainstream then I would've thought by now (I mean, even I have it)

as Blueray becomes more popular, the prices will come down and then it will be mainstream. once that happens DVD will be slowly phased out just like VHS was

I always thought the Blu-ray (or HD DVD, if they had won the format war instead) would end up being a niche format similar to laserdisc was. In other words, the videophiles would be all over it because it offers the best possible picture and sound, but the general public would stick with DVD because it's "good enough". Blu-ray has managed to achieve far more market penetration than I thought they would at this point in time, more than laserdisc ever did in the 20 odd years that format was around for. But I think that both Blu-ray and DVD will coexist for quite awhile yet.

I agree with this! It will happen this way...but it will happen slowly.

I'm more than happy with my "regular" DVDs of TOS.
            I don't need any updates.

PS: I also still play my LPs. Don't mind scratchy sounds and all...

              That's a whole nuther discussion.

I know a lot of people that say LP's actually produce better sound then CD's.

My hearing isn't all that good so they both sound about the same to me.
