Star Trek blu ray info, it's everything I want!

Star Trek DVD news: Announcement for Star Trek - Season 1 on Blu-ray | TVShowsOnDVD.com

    They have all episodes in:

    * Remastered (new effects) versions with surround stereo (7.1 master audio)

    * Original broadcast versions with ORIGINAL MONO BROADCAST AUDIO

All the DVD versions (including the ones without new effects) have had stereo remixed tracks which were different from original broadcast.

I am glad that that both the "purist" side of me is satisfied alongside the "revamped, spiced up bells and whistles" side.

Honestly, I am so glad original complete broadcast versions will be available in the state of the art format for the first time since videotape and laserdisc.

Mike, could you explain that further ?

Do you mean the syndicated cuts version ?

Why would you want them ?

That's really great news Mike. I have to get around to FINALLY getting into Blu Ray. This will probably be at the top of my list once I do.

By broadcast versions, I mean the network broadcast versions with no cuts and alterations.

On DVD, there have never been true original broadcast versions of Star Trek. Even with the non remastered ones, the soundtrack is remixed to surround stereo. Most of the time, the remixes mimic the original soundtrack just fine, but other times there are distinct differences (especially in the first season).

The last time the original audio has been on the original Star Trek episodes was on videotape or laserdisc releases.

Man, I didn't know that. Thanks.
It makes sense, though, 'cause TVs only had one speaker when I was a kid.
I have the first dvd releases and I wasn't terribly interested in getting
the re-vamped ones with the new fangled effects.
Sometimes I feel so very old.
Anyhoo, this almost stirs my interest in Blu-Ray once more.
I found it a little annoying that there had to another format war/change
              so soon.
Whereas even VHS hung around in most homes for at least
20 years, dvd was already getting shown the door.
Don't get me wrong, I like DVD and I'm glad it came along. It's just so much better than VHS.
However, I am cynical about technology/business and I still feel they are rushing everybody for the bread.
Nevertheless, that sounds like a good package, if it is priced right.

Yay! This is great news. The original versions deserve to be preserved for historical and nostalgic purposes, and the updated versions will continue to bring in a younger audience. It's only logical, Captain.

A big example of the new soundtrack is in Balance of Terror. Originally, the proximity phasers (that look like photon torpedos) had no sound effect. On DVD, they do (as in the newest syndicated prints, even ones that don't have the new effects).

I'm fighting the feeling that DVD has become the new VHS but I find myself saying a lot "Only on DVD? Who wants that?".

But that's unfair because properly mastered DVD's can look terrific on HDTV's, although there is no way to overcome that they have 480 lines of resolution compared to HDTV's maximum of 1080 (which is what blu-ray typically uses). Also, the complexity of the color is more pronounced with true HD video.

DVD would've lasted much longer if there wasn't HDTV. DVD couldn't take advantage of that new format.

Looking at this as a total outsider -- because I don't know much about any of the new formats .....

It seems to me DVD vs Blue Ray and whatever - reminds me of - VHS vs Beta.

All the high tech people loved and promoted Beta, but the general mom and pop public chose VHS because the players and tapes were cheaper .. and VHS was already an established act (in the majority's mind).

I can see Blue Ray and HD staying popular with the high tech people, but as long as Walmart sells DVD's and Players for $10.00, I don't think these formats will kick in with the general masses.
