Hey they even brought back Majel Barrett as the voice of the Enterprise. How's that for continuity?

I'm not a Trek diehard----and even I woulda that was pathetic if they
        decided against that....I mean..."why not"?

Will this movie make money..no doubt. Will there be more than one...no doubt again. Will I like it ......??

I was all for this film. I liked the idea of seeing new stories with Kirk and the gang, and steeled myself against the inevitable "they are going to change things". I had hope.

Now...based on all the information released....I'm swinging over to the ney side. I wont be firm either way until I see this thing, but so far...the more information they release....they more I'm realizing that they didnt get it!
This isnt my Star Trek anymore.

Somebody here mentioned Shatner was too old....So am I, I guess, since I'm thinking I would rather have seen a new Trek movie featuring the survivng crew of Captain Kirks Enterprise fighting the good fight at the Beta Riticulii Home for the aged!

For the people comparing this to Van Hager vs Van Roth ... or Scott vs Johnson I disagree with your analogy.

This is more like The New Monkee's

            Remember the New Monkee's ?

            No ?

            I rest my case

No one compared it to Roth/Hagar or Scott/Johnson (at least "seriously")
except me (and Azrak, I guess)...and, like I said: I regret it...too disparate
and/or confusing with the issue at hand

One big issue that divides us is related to Shatner's brood being unable to
play action roles any more (heck, Doohan and Kelley aren't even HERE
to do it...even if they were asked to)..and that issue is the
"let sleeping dogs lie" attitude you seem to taking Mike.

Well, I for one want to see this "dog" woken up.

People like the "Daniel Craig" Bond just fine.

People like the "Christian Bale" Bats just fine.

This could be another one of those...but even if it is...is there
even a CHANCE you'd acknowledge that it was a good reworking?

              I'm guessing "No"---but I won't be presumptious.

The main concern I have is the writing team.. Orci and Jurtzman are known for being "flashy blockbuster" writers (Transformers, Mission Impossible 3), and I worry about there not being a whole lot of substance to go with the flash.

I hope I'm pleasantly surprised, but the expectation I have is that the movie will have its predictable share of cool scenes and action, but the writing will leave something to be desired. Just like 90% of all summer blockbusters.

Better to start with something "flashy" writing-wise to establish the series
and then get more "heady" as the franchise progresses....I'd hate to see
history repeat itself with ST:TMP's "first impression".

Boring "heady" stories are the way to go on first impression.

Star Trek TMP is the perfect example.

Hate it all you like, but there's no denying it created everything there is today that is post-classic series Trek.

You're RIGHT; but it always struck me as one of those things that were made because someone at the top wanted it made, audience be damned! I've heard it got mangled a fair bit in production; including being transformed from a tv show to a movie. I guess Decker and the rest of the background characters were SUPPOSED to be the actual crew, but the studio wanted to go with the name characters.

It really was a horrible movie. (Not as bad a 5, but still pretty bad....) But it did affect everything that came after. (And before; if you look at the design for the chubby Enterprise) I'd heard it DID make money though, hence the sequels.

You're thinking of Gary Cherone, from Extreme, not Sebastian Bach of Skid Row. All good singers, but there's only one DLR.......just like there's only one Captain Kirk until proven otherwise.

I must say I'm looking somewhat forward to the new movie ... I like the classic Trek, and watched TNG but anything after that I couldn't stand. I am a huge Star Wars fan ... and given I doubt this new movie is going to be a hit with true Trek fans ... but for someone like me who is just a mild Trek fan and huge Star wars fan ... this new movie might bring in a whole new fan base that will find the original Trek. It looks like it's going to have a Star Wars mix in with the Trek feel. Or who knows it might suck more than the other TV classics turned Movie remakes.
