    Galactica Spin-Off Announced

I do not watch the show, but I know many here do. This article is in today's Daily Variety-

    Sci Fi greenlights 'Battlestar' prequel
'Caprica' to star Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales
    By DANIEL FRANKEL
'Caprica' is set 50 years prior to 'Battlestar Galactica.'

Sci Fi Channel has greenlit "Caprica," the much-anticipated prequel to hit series "Battlestar Galactica."
"Caprica" will star Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Paula Malcomson and Polly Walker, and will be set 50 years prior to "Galactica's" seminal attack on human civilization by those dreaded 'droids the Cylons. Family-drama-themed series will focus on the Earthlike planet of Caprica as two rival families deal with, among other topical issues, the broader implications of their society's emerging artificial intelligence technology sector.

Produced by Universal Cable Prods., "Caprica" will be exec produced by "Galactica" masterminds Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, along with Remi Aubuchon ("24"). The pilot was co-written by Aubuchon and Moore and directed by Jeffrey Reiner ("Friday Night Lights.")

Having already produced a two-hour backdoor pilot, Sci Fi is aiming for an early 2010 bow for the series, with production starting around the middle of next year, probably in Vancouver, where both "Galactica" and the spinoff's pilot were shot.

" 'Battlestar Galactica' was absolutely our flagship show. It put us on the map and helped transform the perception of the network," said Sci Fi prexy Dave Howe, noting that the cabler hopes to draw a broader audience to a series it sees as more compelling family drama than "space opera."

"We want people to come to this who have never heard of 'Battlestar Galactica,' " he added. "I think, because ('Galactica's') backdrop was space and spaceships, there was a barrier to entry for some viewers. 'Caprica' has none of that. It's an intense family drama set on an Earthlike planet, in the near future, speaking to a lot of the ethical dilemmas that we as a human race are going to have to face very shortly."

"Galactica" has had its fourth and final season in the can for several months, with the final 10 episodes culminating their run March 20. A two-hour movie adaptation, "Battlestar Galactica: The Plan," is slated for early summer.

Mark Stern, original programming topper for Sci Fi and Universal Cable Prods., says waiting until 2010 to bow the prequel will give the producers time to regroup the core of "Galactica's" writing staff, which has largely scattered to other shows.

"One of the other things we have going for is, this is one of the first shows we've done in conjunction with our new cable studio," Stern added. "There will be a lot of coordination between the studio and the network, not just on production, but how the series is launched, as well."

    Hmmmm....

One of my biggest complaints about the new show was that it was a sci-fi series with all the sci-fi sucked out of it.

    >"I think, because ('Galactica's') backdrop was space and spaceships, there was a barrier to entry for some viewers. 'Caprica' has none of that. So.... does this mean they've finally sucked the last bits of sci-fi out of it? "The original Galactica was great, but them spaceships were really distracting...." What next?

-We're big fans of Batman, but it's kinda silly for him to run around in a costume with souped-up car. And his parents being dead is a bummer, so we're gonna make them alive in our new series.
-Star Wars was fantastic, but I always felt more time should have been spent on Luke being a moisture farmer. Oh yeah; without the aliens.
-Superman would be a LOT better if he didn't fly, 'cos that's stupid. People can't fly. And maybe if instead of super strength he has a gun. And fights a polar bear or giant spider.
-Dirty Harry was teriffic! But cop stories are overdone, so we're gonna set ours in a McDonalds, and tone down all the violence and anger.

    *sigh*

I dunno, sounds like a SFX budget thing. Cancel a great show (IMO) and replace it with a less expensive prequel.

"and since in the new show the galactica was the oldest ship in the fleet they can straight recycle the sets" combined with a new cast of unknowns with a B level star means we can expect years of it

Come on guys it would be so cool to have a spin off series about the cylons themselves. Why waste the opportunity?

Lo there do I see my Father.
Lo there do I see my Mother and my Sisters and my Brothers.
Lo there do I see the line of my people back to the begining.
                Lo they do call me.
They bid me take my place among them.

....maybe.... The problem with that sort of thing is; once you start getting into the bad guy aliens you run the risk of making them just like every OTHER group of badguy aliens. There's only so much you can do, and very few big budget sci-fi shows/movies/books will take a chance by going too far afield with them.

I'd be kind of curious if they went with the old idea that they were cyborg lizard guys.... but even that would seem a lot like the Cybermen from the old Doctor Who. But weren't the new ones built by humans or somesuch?

It would be interesting to see the Reimagined Galacticas cylons as the humans first discovered AI and what the humans did to them that led up to the first cylon war.

Also what led the first centurian cylons to want to develop into the human cylons, even the start of their "religion"

As much as I think the new Galactica series is a good show; I must also admit that I was, and still am, a bit disappointed in the changes they made when compared to the old series.
Mostly I agree with the previous poster who said they sucked the sci-fi out of it. What I always say is they sucked all the things out that made it unique. For example all the little details like their uniforms, their customs, their words (centon, yahren, etc).
If you replaced the ship and changed the title it could be any space show. That's really all that ties this into the original series (apart from some names). Still a good show, don't get me wrong, just really not Galactica if you boil it all down.

I bet the planet Caprica will look amazingly like Vancouver

I'd like to see the old Cylons get their own show.
                            Cylon and son.

Two run-down Cylons own a scrap yard, and have all kinds of slapstick adventures.
Like the one where Cy Junior gets TWO red eyes, that go in opposite directions. Man, that would be hilarious....
