And I think they have set up two possible scenarios for a female Doctor or at least a female Time Lord. I don't believe they are through with the Donna Noble character yet...she has the Doctor's DNA within her or something of that order becoming half-human/half-Time Lord.
And I expect the Doctor's daughter Jenny back again as well. Although I wasn't thrilled with the whole concept, it was very heavy-handed and sort of shoved through the system. Maybe they'll send the actual Doctor away awhile and fill in with Jenny running the Tardis, then bring in a new Doctor down the line? The only problem then would be a Tardis filled with angst ridden teenagers as companions, sort of a Buffy in Space...oh, picture the unrequited love Young Bobby has for Jenny, who cannot love him since she is part Time Lord, oh, the heartbreak! No place for that on Doctor Who...well, unless you consider Rose...or Martha...ahh, let's not go there.
Personally, I would love to see something more done with the Doctor's early life, maybe a special explaining a bit about his first wife and family and his grand-daughter Susan. An adventure or two prior to Barbara & Ian. In fact, a series of specials from prior Doctors would be interesting, Peter Davison certainly and Paul Mcgann.Leave a comment:

>A lot of british TV was different from our regular North American shows, it wasn't just Who.
True. One of the reason I watch so many old shows, from a number of different countries, is 'cos they're different to me. The British sci-fi stuff always seemed more serious than ours; and more willing to experiment. That's something I'd always liked. Dr Who, the prisioner, Max Headroom....
>they have done a decent job to explain why the tenth planet ones were so different from the trougton and baker era ones.
That's pretty much the description from the old FASA RPG. I think it's nifty how they take the whole, sloppy loose history and USE it. I wish more shows did that, instead of just ignoring or changing the established back story.
...I'm looking at YOU; Star Trek....

>Then we can have original cybemen and not need to have a "mcguffin" to bring daleks in, Galifrey etc.
So.... do you mean the ORIGINAL original Cybermen....? 'Cos I'd love to see the old "guy in ski mask" ones come back! When you think on it; if you can travel through time you can bring back durned near ANYTHING pretty easily. 'Cept maybe the Daleks, since they can time travel too and can alter their history as well.
>I for one would love to see an Ice warrior with modern special effects
Normally that sort of thing scares me, but they've done a decent job of not really changing any of the monsters they brought back. 'Cept the cybermen, and I didn't mind them so much.

BBC - Doctor Who Classic Episode Guide - Cyberhistory
I prefered the silver wetsuit myself over the silver parachute suit or the mummy look
I don't really care how they change the cybermen look I just prefer them to be telosian and mondasian not the end result of some rich syncophant wanting to be immortal on an alternate timeline
and BBc reconciled the dalek history
original history
BBC - Doctor Who Classic Episode Guide - The first history of the Daleks
then there is a second timeline affected by Tom Baker's Doctor in genesis of the daleks. The Doctors actions changed the entire dalek history so the dalek stories of the 1st 3 doctors never happened only the timelords remember.

Kudos to the person who worked all this out for the beebLeave a comment:

For the Cybermen, one thing i'll give the New Series credit for ... They did depict a REAL 80's era Cyberman head in the episode Dalek.
Seeing that, made the later Cybermen cool with me....
Mostly because the series did acknowledge Cybermen look different in this universe -- and they do change.
BTW,
One thing I always hated about the Tomb era Cybermen... I couldn't hardly understand what they were saying.
Tenth Planet was bad too --- for understanding their voices.Leave a comment:

[QUOTE=ctc;225511]>You kind of had to update the Cybermen for the new series, they're all about technology.
Same with the Daleks, but it always bothered me that with all the time travelling they never met the old versions of the bad guys.
I agree with Don, Take the classic Dr Who for example. In Season 22; Attack of the Cybermen, The 6th Doctor,(Colin Baker) goes to Telos. Know the current Cybermen could have updated the control section of the tomb. However what got me was the Cybermen frozen there and revived by the current form of Cybermen looked just like the current form not the form of Cyberman shown in the Season 5; The Tomb of the Cybermen with the 2nd Doctor, (in my option the best Patrick Troughton). Which was the storyline that interduced the Cyberman Tomb story line.

And the new Cybermen are technically not "new" Cybermen since they're from another dimension. That helped; although the new designs don't seem out of place compared to the old ones since they kept the Playmobil-looking faces.
I'm lukewarm on him; mostly 'cos the Fox movie traumatized me so bad. But it wasn't HIS fault, so I wouldn't be too disturbed if he came back at some point.
Oh hey, I don't want a return to the Fox series but I'd welcome a BBC version of the Time War starring McGann.
It's definitely different. The original show sorta existed in it's own space.... separate from the rules of tv, or story, or logic.... and that was a big part of what made it so cool. It was well and truly different. The new one is a lot more slick, which of course means it's a lot more like everything else; but they do a decent job coming up with weird bad guys and they haven't deviated too far from the original story. So I really like it. Just as much as the original, but in a different way.
A lot of british TV was different from our regular North American shows, it wasn't just Who. Everything from "The Phoenix and the Carpet" to "Tomorrow People" "The Young Ones", even the "Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin" seemed to operate on the concept that their audience weren't morons.
That concept of being serialized was something we often didn't get and because there weren't commercial breaks, we didn't have to get a recap twice a show.
The new show is a lot more North American in it's nature and sometimes I lament that but I still enjoy the heck out of the characterization they've done.
As for the "Good Book" notion, a lot of old Who waivers from "Good Book" to "Silver Age Comic" for me. The pacing is slower which isn't a bad thing at all.Leave a comment:

The negative of bigger budget and 1 hour time slot vs 22-25 minute episodes on a shoe string. in order to justify the large expense of the "not so "special effects of the old show ( which I love btw) the script writer had to slow it down to defray the costs of th set the costume etc. with green screen sets you don't have as much costs.
I would like to see the new show use the multi story arcs they have been doing. and slow it down a little.
I don't mind the music but I would like some ambient silence ( they even do in on galacitca ) and like others have pointed out it has it's own impact on story look at Cast away or the most recent version of Blade runner. Silence has it's own sotry telling capabilityLeave a comment:

I would tend to agree. They often go for the rollercoaster effect, non-stop pace, and I liked it when, in classic Who, things took a little longer....Leave a comment:

I wanna know what they're gonna do with the MK2 Doctor they got running around now.

I've been getting back into the Classic Series bigtime lately.
For a while, when I was riding high on the New Series, I almost-ALMOST forgot about the Classic Series for a momment.
Now that i'm watching the Classic Series again, I really appreciate it even more then I did back when it was new.
For one thing, I love how many of the stories sometimes border on tedium for a bit.
It builds up suspence ..... At the end of the show, you almost feel like you just read a good book.
The New Series, I just don't get that from it.
The New Series tries to sucker people in with holy church music sounding scores whenever something is happening --- Slick special effects --- and MODERN story pacing (get the story done fast in 45 minutes before the surfing gen audience turns the channel).
In the end, you don't get that good book feeling.
To be honest,
I don't care who they get as the new Doctor.
Doctor Who The New Series is "ok", but in order for me to REALLY LOVE IT, they're going to have to change almost everything --- and I know they wont.Leave a comment:
