Hey--you have to take into account the whole arc of the character. By the end Han was a General in the rebel army and led a dangerous mission to endor. He didn't have the benefit of years of Academy training. He's a kid from teh wrong side of the tracks who helped destroy the Empire and married a Princess. Self made man. He's Joe the Smuggler!

Actually beg to differ here. Solo was in the Imperial academy. (According to the backstory in novels and comics)
