David Cronenberg

I'm super stoked for a big David Cronenberg exhibit and retrospective that's going to be opening in Toronto soon. They're going to display artwork and props from his movies, plus screen a bunch of his classics with talks, guests, etc.

Personally I like most of his work through his whole career - and so many of the first horror movies that really freaked me out were his.

Rabid, The Dead Zone, Videodrome and The Fly all made a huge impact on me as a kid, and totally changed my appreciation for the horror genre and movies in general.

Any other fans?

I am a fan as one of his movies was one of the most terrifying experiences I had as a kid. "Shivers" just freaked me out.

Fly is a classic. One of the best remakes ever! I didnt get to see Rabid until years later. I would have loved to see it as a child.
I LOVED the character he gave life to in NightBreed. He was perfect in that part and would have been cool to see him reprise the role.

Hmmmm....

Yeah, "Shivers" is messed up and creepy. (AND one of my faves!) "Rabid" was pretty good too. I find I like his lesser known stuff a lot better than his big budget/big news ones. When you get to stuff like "The Fly" or "Videodrome" they're good, but there's something missing.... like there's an extra step of disturbing they COULD have taken but didn't.

Oh yeah, I've been a Cronenberg fan since my dad brought home Rabid from the video store when I was a teenager. My dad is a big fan too, and he always rented the latest Cronenberg films as soon as they came out on video, so I've followed his career from a young age. I'm a huge fan of Videodrome (man, that film did a real number on my teenage brain!) and his remake of The Fly. Seeing his film Crash in the theatre was a memorable experience, over half the audience walked out during the running of the film in confusion and/or disgust, often muttering negative comments under their breath. I had never seen that happen before, it was awesome seeing the film mess up the mostly mainstream audience really bad.

I didnt realize he wrote and directed SCANNERS. That was a cool movie for it's time. I need to check that out again.

When I watched the unveiling at TIFF, I was floored.

It's only a number of cities. I don't know what we be more expensive for me, Toronto or NY.

I've been lucky enough to see most of is films as a kid/teenager.
I also really liked his acting in NightBreed.

Cool, the exhibit goes on from Nov 1 - Jan 19, I'm sure I'll be able to have a chance to go check it out sometime in that time frame. Sounds interesting!

You may have already checked but I thought I might mention it also goes by "Shivers", "They Came from Within", or "The Parasite Murders" I dont have Netflix so I couldnt check but thought it might be worth checking the other titles.

I just checked both sites, it seems like Netflix US and Canada only has "The Fly" and "A History of Violence" right now. Both great, but it's too bad more of his early gritty horror stuff isn't on there.

"The Brood" - is another fun one I don't think we've mentioned yet. For some reason I only saw it for the first time about 4 years ago.

Haha - the same thing happened when I saw it, and there wasn't much of an audience when we started. Of course with almost the whole theatre empty there had to be 4 lunkhead 20 year-old dudes in front of us and all 4 had to voice their disgust every single time something homo-erotic happened. 4 loud groans of disapproval EVERY SINGLE TIME. Ugh. We get it guys. Shaddap!

Off hand I remember TONS of walk outs when I saw "Wild At Heart" at the mall theatre. It won the Cannes Film Festival Palme D'or, so it brought out the "Dances With Wolves" crowd.

Recently I saw Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" in a packed opening weekend teen audience and after the movie ended dozens of 18 year-old girls whined in unison "that was THE WORST movie I EVER saw!" Fun times.

Yeah, I think the peak of the walkouts happened during that one particular kissing scene when I saw the movie. The coolest thing about seeing that film in the theatre was that after it was over, you had to get in your car and drive home. The perfect end to that experience (I guess especially if you witnessed or got into a car accident on the way home, man that would really mess you up!)

That's a great point! It was absolutely a movie that sat with me afterwards. I know it's not going to be for everyone though. I had never noticed Elias Koteas in anything before and he was such a stand out. Also, the I thought the Howard Shore minimal score was fantastic - years later and I can still recall it.
