If this doesn't get you to buy a Blu-Ray player, nothing will.

I know some of you guys here haven't taken the plunge yet, but if you're on the fence, this just might change your mind. Check out these DVD vs. Blu-Ray comparison shots of the new Universal Monsters release of Dracula.

I've been saying it for years...you simply haven't truly seen a movie til you've seen it on Blu-Ray. The details and contrast missing on DVD is staggering in these comparison shots. Costume details, the depth and architecture of Dracula's crypt, and the close up of Lugosi show what this format is all about.

I doubt this film has looked this good since it's original release.

Wow. I have a Blu-Ray, but was on the fence on these, since I have the Legacy DVDs. I may have to give in now.

        Neat!

But is the cleaner pics a result of Blu-Ray specifically, or because the new editions were cleaned up?

Great example of HD vs. LD. As a Blue-Ray player owner, I was amazed at how great regular DVDs look through the HDMI cable. For this alone, DVD collectors really should consider a Blue-Ray player, even if they don't plan to buy any Blue-Ray discs.

Both. The DVD's were digitally remastered from the best source prints available at the time, but a lot of them were over/underexposed, scratched, etc.
For the blu-rays, the film was scanned frame by frame, contrast corrected, and scratches, dust, artifacts, etc. erased. This alone would result in a cleaner image, but the details would still be soft and fuzzy. The actual clarity, sharpness and film grain that is now visible is solely because of the blu-ray's higher resolution. It's pretty much equal to a pristine 35MM print.

              Looks great. Very crisp images.
But I worked hard to get a DVD collection, I'll not start replacing discs any time soon...

Universal is releasing 8 Monster movies in a Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection set. I heard they all look awesome but both Dracula and Frankenstein are especially superb.

The set is worth it for Dracula alone. I am estatic that Dracula finally recieved a long overdue true restoration. The previous prints Universal had been using for their home video releases were in just disgraceful condition. Including the disappointing 75th Anniversary "digitally remastered" Legacy edition.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Get the region free UK version like I am Brian, much cheaper

When the ALIEN movies came out in a blu ray box set, I remember being steered to get the region free UK version by someone on a list and it saved me a ton compared to getting the US version. Well, now we got the Universal Monsters set and the same thing holds true http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Classic-Monsters-Essential

I will enjoy having these movies in the best quality possible but I tell you for we, the 70's kids, who discovered these movies on afternoon and weekend TV shown from well worn 16mm prints (that made it seem like the movies were as ancient a relic as some of the things and curses unearthed) it will bypass a bit of the nostalgia

That is a good point. The fuzziness may have added to the creepy factor.

My biggest problem for getting a Blu-Ray player is that I'd have to pay for the player and a High-Def TV to watch it on.
