    The New Munster's cast

Just saw this. I like O'Connell... I like the Munsters... together>? Probably not so much mainly because the classic TV crew was fine. I might be more receptive had they decided to do a movie versus a TV show

I like Jerry O'Connell okay, but I'm having trouble mentally picturing him as Herman Munster. Wonder if they asked Edward Herrman, who I always thought would make a GREAT Herman Munster. 'Course he might be a bit to old to play the role, now....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Edward Hermann already played the role in a TV movie back in 1995.
The original surviving cast members even made cameos:

It's decent Jim, if a little uninspired.

The "New" Munsters is only Munsters in name (and even that may not be when it comes to light) and the characters won't look or act anything like the Munsters you and I love. So it doesn't really matter if they cast Jerry O'Connell or Keenan Thomson or Chuck Liddell in the part... Because we have no idea what it's "supposed" to be like.

This is not a serious attempt to remake the Munsters. This is a largely completely different project about a family of monsterish people who just happened to be named the Munsters, in hopes that it'll attract some older viewers with it's percieved name value.

Basically the show is only based on the Munsters, because people were going to draw that comparison anyway and it'll get people talking about the show before it ever airs, because the Munsters is something people know. Whereas if this show wasn't based on the Munsters, but was the exact same in every other way, no one would talk about it or give it a buzz.

For the record, if you were going to try an honest remake of the Munsters, Brad Garrett would be great for Herman. Not only does he have the "big oaf" comedy chops, he actually wants to play the role and can do a great Herman impression. Which of course means, he'll never be considered for the role.

Reinventing the Munsters as a totally miscast one hour drama is such a great idea!
I already know the titles of the first two episodes!

            1. "Pilot"
            2. "Cancelled"

I'm a fan of Bryan Fuller, so i'll be tuning in. Bryan Singer directed the Usual Suspects and X-Men, so i'm willing to give him a pass on Superman Returns.

I like Fuller, I like Singer but I'm really curious how they can turn a premise like this into a drama. I've played out every scenario in my head and it just looks .....strange.

If it's "Drama" in the sense that Pushing Daisies, Dead Like Me and Wonderfalls were one hour shows, I can see it working. The actors play their roles very straight and earnest, but the situations they find themselves in are absurd, whimsical, and darkly comic. I have no doubt that we'll also have that Amelie/Tim Burton aesthetic going on, since that was such a big part of Pushing Daisies.

So I'd hazard a guess that it won't have a laugh track or sitcom plot shenanigans like the original. Note that all three of Fuller's other shows are "client based" premises... which might hint at the direction this will take. I'm hoping that Mocking Bird Lane takes place in the "Fuller-verse", just so we have the possibility of Reapers or the Pie Maker showing up.

Unfortunately, other than the great first season of Heroes and Star Trek Voyager, Fuller's work has really been geared towards cult appeal rather than mass audiences. I suspect it might get the same critical acclaim and small devoted following the other shows have, and if they have a large budget that means it won't last very long either.

You've seen it....a lot lately. More monsters whining about their girlfriends, pseudo-evil versions out there, having to sort of stay hidden.... I wonder if Gran'pa will sparkle now.

This makes me think of the BRADY BUNCH into THE BRADYS
...taking a 70s sitcom concept and turning it into a 90s dramatic series.

I always have hope something can work... I'm not bothered by the
                          attempts... but its tough.
