Is the Creature From the Black Lagoon super not scary ?

I think Karloff as the Monster in the first movie approaches scary. He's so gaunt and cadaver-like. His makeup accentuates this, and he really does pull of the "reanimated corpse" angle well. As the movie progresses, fear turns to pity, but that first scene of him when turns around most have scared the beejeezus out of folks in 1931.

Yeah, Whale's jumpy cut was probably there to produce shock.

In my opinion, the classic Universal Monsters movies were more about atmosphere than scares. The Monsters weren't the usual bwahahaha mustache twirling I am evil and I'm going to take over the world type of villians and they weren't just mindless killing machines. The Monsters had depth, emotion and personalties. They had real purpose and reasons for what they did. You felt sympathy for them.

The Creature design to this day is amazing. The Creature isn't scary because he isn't evil. He is not really the bad guy. His home is invaded and he is hunted. It's also part beauty and the beast retold with a sea monster. Great flick.
