^Burton is invariably the weirdest and creepiest character involved in his films. But he's good at it! He's much better at this sort of thing than say POTA.

Dark Shadows appears to be something he really wants to make, so I am excited about it.

i was wondering if theres more word on what the movie is actually about.
1 Since it takes place in '72 does it fill in the gaps AFTER the show.
2 A remake of house of dark shadows.
3 condeses some of the original storyline
Burton definately wanted to make it. Hes a big fan of it the rumors say. He and Depp have been wanting to make it for a number of years.

Maybe it's the fingernails and the hand gesturing, but I'm getting a bit of "pretty Nosferatu" out of Depp in the top photo.

Looking forward to a Hot Toys Barnabas Collins figure with interchangeable Frid & Depp heads/hands. Since they've already done Depp as Sparrow, Todd, Hatter & Edward (with Crane on the way) it's within the realm of possibilities...right?


FigureMod73 - It will be a structural retelling. On May 18, 2011 WB released an official plot summary/synopsis which is fairly detailed. The basic elements from the initial Barnabas storyline are featured but revamped in order to make a coherent 2 hour movie (which in the DS universe can very easily be considered a parallel time storyline). Below is the text from the official release...

"In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David’s new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote."

(Also teased by WB last week is that Dr. Hoffman is there specifically for David, as he thinks he sees ghosts and believes that he can speak with his deceased mother over the telephone.)

they arent really giving to much away are they? i guess this would be the only way with a new audience. maybe this could be the start of a new series of films. Im so sick of hearing about twilight. (Im really rooting for this to be a good film!)

I'm with you on Twilight...

I think this is a smart move. I couldn't imagine them attempting to condense the first year or so of Barnabas' original storyline into a movie and have it make sense, much less cover the other characters' background as well. This scenario pulls together all of the basic & necessary elements into a solid foundation which could potentially branch off in any given direction, through any period of time.

I read somewhere that Warner Brothers is hoping that this will become a franchise to help cover the gap that the Harry Potter series leaves in its wake. I hope it works!

i was wondering what your thoughts are on the early 1990s version. I think it was Ben Cross who played Barnabas? Im guessing your probably a very big fan of the series, i was wondering how you compare the original to it. I saw the original probably in the early eighties and HAVENT seen it since. I really want the entire set (its on the list with a ton of other stuff i want,lol) the new tv show i remembered had a good actor that played his servant, that and how cool the Barnabas was is all i remember from it. i know that show was a hour long and ALOT of people wanted the newer one to start where the original had left off. Even though i havent seen it in a number of years i wouldnt mind if it went into new territory to after a few films.

Was one of the last story lines about Adam? I cant remember that far back, lol

Figuremod73 - I liked the '91 Revival series. They did a great job of recreating the first year of the original Barnabas storyline in a brief 12 episode run. The only problem with it is that it was shown on NBC on Friday nights and was pre-empted on a regular basis due to live news coverage of the Gulf War. Because of the serial nature of the program, viewers were frustrated because they couldn't keep up with the story due to all of the "rescheduled" episodes, hence the cancellation. Which is too bad, because the show attracted a new audience which had no previous exposure to the original.

The Revival series is available on DVD, and although it's a little dated, it still holds up as a great story. It's also a great substitute for those who don't have the patience to watch the original daily soap, and acts as something of a "Cliff Notes" to the origin of Barnabas.

The Adam storyline actually ended about midway through the original series in December 1968, just prior to the intro of Quentin. (The series ran from June '66 through April '71.)

Thanks for the info. i heard that the original aired on sci fi a number of years ago but i missed it at the time. I remembered when it originally aired i was always drawn into it. it doesnt really seem so much as a soap than as a 30 horror movie (in one of the earlier post someone said it had alot in common with Hammer films) i remembered that the little mishaps and problems with lines use to actually add to the show as well. (wasnt it broadcast live in England?)
Some of the stuff with Adam i remember very vividly. I also remembered something about finding a temp cure? There was also something about a guy who was buried in bricks in the basement and then comes back. (kind of like that Poe story!)
It would be nice if MeTV picked up this show i would record it!
