True, the movie itself wasn't all that bad, it just wasn't a Godzilla movie.
I laughed when they referenced this one in the opening scene of Godzilla, Mothra and King Gidorrah: Giant Monster All-Out Attack. Basically they're making fun of it

Particularly when you take into account what a huge hit a movie with the ridiculous title of "Cloverfield" was. I think they pretty much could have named it anything else and did as much business as the rest of their films of that era like ID4.

I am fine with a CGI Godzilla, kicking some serious butt, destroying cities, and breathing whatever crazy effects they want out of his mouth. However, I need to recognize the monster is Godzilla the moment I see him, and just as important, when he opens his mouth, he better sound EXACTLY like Godzilla.

The roar is very important.

Over the past 20 years it seemed to have gotten higher in pitch.

I have no idea why they did this --- the older deeper roar was much scarier
