Hector started a thread on this, but since he didn't want spoilers posted, I thought I'd start a new one.
My wife is a big Twilight fan, so we went to see this last night. I thought the first one was pretty good. A different take on a vampire story, but not as hokey as it could be.
As far as movies go, this one seemed superior. The production values, effects, etc all seemed to benefit from a bigger budget. The vampire makeup seemed more distinct and consistent throughout. The wolf effects were well-done, and were convincing enough not to pull one out of the movie.
I know a lot of the marketing was "Team Edward" vs. "Team Jacob", and after seeing this, I'll side with Jacob. He was a much more interesting character. Less morose and "emo" than Edward Sparkleskins (the name I coined for everyone's favorite diamond skinned dead-guy. My wife just loves it!). One thing that becomes apparent in this one, is that Bella is one self-absorbed individual. Man, is she wrapped up in herself and her own little world. I guess maybe she's a metaphor for all teenagers/young adults who think their relationships are the end-all-be-all of human existence. Or she could just be a shallow pain-in-the-neck (pun intended). My wife tells me that this point is made by many Twilight fans, and discussions often get heated. Seems most of the older fans of the books notice how self-involved the characters are in this story.
Overall, a good flick worth watching. A good date movie, with enough action and hints of horror elements to keep us guys interested
