    Twilight: New Moon (spoilers)

Hector started a thread on this, but since he didn't want spoilers posted, I thought I'd start a new one.

My wife is a big Twilight fan, so we went to see this last night. I thought the first one was pretty good. A different take on a vampire story, but not as hokey as it could be.

As far as movies go, this one seemed superior. The production values, effects, etc all seemed to benefit from a bigger budget. The vampire makeup seemed more distinct and consistent throughout. The wolf effects were well-done, and were convincing enough not to pull one out of the movie.

I know a lot of the marketing was "Team Edward" vs. "Team Jacob", and after seeing this, I'll side with Jacob. He was a much more interesting character. Less morose and "emo" than Edward Sparkleskins (the name I coined for everyone's favorite diamond skinned dead-guy. My wife just loves it!). One thing that becomes apparent in this one, is that Bella is one self-absorbed individual. Man, is she wrapped up in herself and her own little world. I guess maybe she's a metaphor for all teenagers/young adults who think their relationships are the end-all-be-all of human existence. Or she could just be a shallow pain-in-the-neck (pun intended). My wife tells me that this point is made by many Twilight fans, and discussions often get heated. Seems most of the older fans of the books notice how self-involved the characters are in this story.

Overall, a good flick worth watching. A good date movie, with enough action and hints of horror elements to keep us guys interested

yup saw yesterday as well, I agree it was a really good film

I get why people like Jacob so much now, his character really is cool. How he loses his temper is hilarious (Kind of like the Hulk) But I still gotta go with team Edward here, he left just to save her life and was willing to lose his out of guilt of leaving her. True love man

and while she did lead Jacob on, you can clearly see she was still into Edward the whole time

Intresting comments. In the UK press the first film got 4 stars as being very good of it's type. This second film got 1 star for being total rubbish.

The second got a weak review in comparison to the first on NPR as well.

I haven't seen either.... I'm kind of put off by how instantaneous the werewolf transformation are.

                        >Bella is one self-absorbed individual.

That's a common problem most chick flicks have: they're SUPPOSED to be introspective, but because the main character spends the whole film inside her own head mooning over Mr Wrong, it really feels like there's NOTHING else that matters to them. Which comes across as shallow. Which, given the content of most chick flicks.... is.

                        >Everybody keeps telling Bella how great she is and all

I thought that was weird too! They made such a point in the first one of how much everyone loved her. (She even has THREE guys mooning after her!) I was expecting some sort of whammy.

                        >I'm kind of put off by how instantaneous the werewolf transformation are.

....in the RPG that costs a Rage point....

I have read both books and have seen both movies.

A female friend of mine told me about the books before the book craze took off and how much she like them.

When I found out the books were catching on at my daughter's school (this was last year)...I immediately asked my friend if she thought the content was appropriate for an 11 year old girl. She said that the first two books are fairly tame but the 3rd and 4th ones are a little more sexually explicit than the first two and that I should probably read them and then decide for myself. As a side note, she mentioned that New Moon was the weakest of the 4 books.

I read the first two and gave my daughter the green light. I did enjoy some of the fight scenes from the book but otherwise thought the books were just ok...not really my cup of tea but I wasn't really reading out of my own interest, just making sure that I thought it was appropriate for my daughter.

The book took off soon after my friend mentioned it to me and after reading "Twilight" I asked her to explain to me why is it that females seem to swoon over Edward because I honestly don't get it. Her response was that Edward (the character) is in essence what every female fanticizes in a perfect man....handsome, protective, romantic, mannerly, and basically is in love with her to the point of wanting to spend the rest of eternity with her (her words, not mine). She said her biggest concern with teenagers and tweens reading the book is that no human male can possibly live up to the standards of Edward. She also made a point to say that even though his character is every female's dream; his character is very controlling over Bella and not allowing her much autonomy which also is not a good signal to send to younger female readers.

With that said, I thought both movies were pretty true to the book. I did think the first movie was better than the 2nd but mostly because the first book had a better plot than the 2nd so the movies are really more of a reflection of the book.

I have not read Eclipse or Breaking Dawn which are the 3rd and 4th books of the series but my friend said that she thought Eclipse was the best of the 4 books, Breaking Dawn 2nd, Twilight 3rd, and New Moon the weakest of the bunch.
