Well, same basic framework in that you have a group of people under siege at a farmhouse. I guess it's about as much a remake as the current Inglorious Basterds is, which is a huge departure in execution from the original.
Having just seen Survival, it spins out characters from Diary, so I guess Diary and Survival can be seen as a start to a new cycle of (Canadian) Zombie movies for Romero.
Let me elaborate, and I apologize to the non-Canadians out there who might not get the references...
Romera has lived in Canada for the last five years now and is well on his way to citizenship, having married a Canadian woman and achieved permanent residence status as well as being honored as a newly minted Canadian filmmaker in a ceremony on Saturday.
Essentially the first twenty minutes of Survival of the Dead is the Zombie equivalent of "Beachcombers" and the rest of the film is "Road to Avonlea... with Zombies".
I swear I also saw Ricky from the Trailer Park Boys zombified at some point as well.
If I'm not mistaken I think in the very begining of land it is implied that it basically follows the timeline of night, dawn, and day pretty good and then you wind up at land 25-30 years later.
Diary however is not in continuity and takes place nowadays.
