Oh, yeah! What a horror movie! The way I understand it, Spielberg was so pushy with Hooper that he practically directed the movie himself. Which makes sense because it is much more "awe and wonder" than "awe and wonder at the power of the chainsaw".

Talk about horror in the mundane. My family still jokes about "Questa Verde" (is that right?) "The grass is greener on EVERY side." (mostly because of the corpses)

Mina is the world's first Paranormal Petsitter in the new middle-grade book series by Gary Buettner, MONSTER PETS, coming in FALL 2014 from EMBY KIDS. Spooky adventure that's perfect reading for kids 8-12

It is one of my favorite horror movies. To me, ghosts and hauntings are way scarier than some guy out to kill everyone. It scared me as a kid and it still does, but mostly because I can relate to that boy's fear of that clown he has. That clown still scares me when I watch the movie (Wuss? You bet. Ashamed? Nope.). Plus, I was just like that boy when I was younger, meaning of course, I was afraid of the dark and the invisible things that might have been under my bed, in my closet, etc. Great movie even today.

By the way, my son doesn't own any clown-related toys. For both our sakes.

I liked it a lot, and I think people don't give Hooper enough credit for it.
I mean, it's not because the movie had no chainsaw, that it wasn't his work, right?
            The man can be versatile.

Btw: did you know about the Poltergeist movie curse?

Lots of illnesses and deaths surround it.
The little girl died a couple of years after, due to illness. She was so young....
The girl who played the oldest daughter was strangled to death,.....

            Spooky!

I don't know about Hooper's contribution to Poltergeist. Credit where credit is due, it's a great movie, and he was the credited director.

However, the family scenes in Poltergeist are nothing like anything else Hooper has done, but very similar to many scenes Spielberg has shot.

Even though Spielberg was filming E.T. at the time, nearly all the principal actors involved have said the major scenes they acted in were directed with Spielberg present. "Making Of" footage shows us this is true.

Also, Spielberg usually continued to work with the directors of movies he produced - for example, Dante and Zemeckis - he never worked with Hooper again and I think there's a reason for that.

I LOVE Chainsaw, so don't get me wrong, I think Hooper has talent, but I don't see his work when I watch Poltergeist. In many ways a director can be a hired technician rather than THE artist of a work, and I think this is the case with Hooper on Poltergeist.

I haven't seen it in years, but it was one of the first horror movies I watched, and it did indeed scare the living beejeezus out of me! Good movie all around though, well-rounded, which can't be said for most horror flicks of the last 30 years.

Captain Gorn was right about the movie curse

The lil girl died from a unexpected burst belly. This occured on the third movie.. The girl was replaced with another clone...

The teenager sister was strangled by her estrangled ex boyfriend..

I think there was one more who died.... I think it was that boyfriend of the girl's sister...

Hey did you notice the horrible buck teeth on the older brother while he spoke... He looked like Bugs Bunny.. That's the funny thing I noticed about him... Bwahahaha

Heather O'Rourke was the little Girl
                    From wikipedia:

O'Rourke became ill in early 1987, and was misdiagnosed by Kaiser Permanente Hospital as having Crohn's disease. She was prescribed medicine to treat the Crohn's, which allegedly "puffed up cheeks."
On January 31, 1988 O'Rourke was ill again, vomiting and unable to keep anything down. The next morning she collapsed while trying to leave for the hospital and her step-father called paramedics. O'Rourke suffered a cardiac arrest en route to the hospital, and after resuscitation was airlifted by helicopter to Children's Hospital and Health Center in San Diego, where she died.
Speaking to reporters, O'Rourke's manager David Wardlow initially announced that it was believed O'Rourke died of influenza.

However, hospital spokesman Vincent Bond announced that O'Rourke died during surgery to repair a congenital acute bowel obstruction (stenosis of the intestine), complicated by septic shock; this report was corroborated by the San Diego County coroner's office on February 3, two days after her death.Later reports changed the specific cause of death to cardiac arrest caused by septic shock brought on by the intestinal stenosis.

Great movie and one I consider to be largely Spielberg's project. I like Tobe Hooper and a number of his films. But Spielberg's direction and influence are all over this. And the production accountings for the film seem to suggest that. It certainly reflects a period in Spielberg's career when everything he touched was gold. One-of-a-kind film that certainly should have been left a one time story. The sequels were terrible.

Her dad Dominic Dunne was a novelist. He died yesterday. Wrote a book about the whole thing as a way to try and get over the devastation. Started with the intention of the character he saw as himself killing the man that took his daughter. When he got to that part he couldn't write it and ended up just injuring him and doing some time for assault. Claimed it helped him overcome the loss. The guy got 6 years for strangling his daughter but got out in 4 for time served.
