In elementary, we had hot lunch or could pack. Once we got to middle school - 6, 7, 8th grade - we also had a third option of ala carte. In elementary I'd buy very rarely. Mom would let me do ala carte one day a week once I moved up. I'd get a couple slices of what in hindsight was the nastiest pizza ever and two chocolate milks.

I am trying to remember what lunch boxes I had. The one I remember most is my purpl superfriends one, and before that I had a yellow Charlie Brown. I know I had a couple more, probably superhero related. I'd have to look around and see if I could jog my memory.

My son just picked out his first lunch box for pre-school. He glanced over the big wall of lunchboxes, and grabbed himself a Superman. I was a little worried that he might go all Dora and Diego on me, but he did himself proud:-)

sadly, it was hot lunch at school or no lunch, when we were kids...now, on the other hand, my kids usually get to take their lunches if there is something that they dont like...

I always brown bagged it. Every once in awhile I would eat breakfast at school when they had cinnamon buns, Mmmmm Yummmy.

I had the best of all possible worlds in Middle School/Jr. High. We lived a block from the school and Mom was home a few days a week so I exercised the option to eat a home cooked quite frequently, the lunchroom ladies at my school could flat out cook, or if I felt like it, I could pack a lunch (Mom always kept pudding cups and variety pack, single serving chips on hand).

It's always nice to have options.

The only time I'd brown bag it is if the school was serving lasagna or baked ziti. That stuff was usually nasty.

If it was something that I didn't like I brownbagged it.

spam fritters, chips on fridays, different coloured/flavoured custards, artic roll, huge pies cut into squares, lumpy mash, a plastic pitcher of water on each table, seconds or thirds if you wanted it and of course the cheer that went up every time someone dropped and smashed a plate......oh yeah....those were the days.
You can almost feel the anticipation when someone breaks a plate of glass in a restuarant ..theres a silent pause as everybody looks round to see if a cheer's going to go up when theres a load of 30 pluses in the room...sometimes there's a muted cheer from a few people and everyone laughs at the memory of school dinners...lol
