I thought theaters had to hand the majority of their proceeds over to the film studios and as someone already posted, maked the bulk of their money selling concessions (which is why it costs $5 to buy $.25 worth of popcorn).
There was a great movie theater in D.C. I can't remember the name of it or whether it is still in existence that used to seat you at a table and you could order a full meal including pitchers of beer while you watched the movie. The food was good and I believe there was a button on the table that you pushed to alert the waitresses that you wanted to order something so they weren't continually bothering you during the movie.
