Many songs move me. U2's song MLK.
I am proud to be Americana. In today's society, I would be considered folklore -Me

Ten years ago, both my (first) dogs were ill, and died within 24 hours of each other.
I played a lot of Sting then. Whenever I hear "Let your soul be your pilot", which is about losing everything and not knowing what to do, I still get choked up.

I used to sing that to my kids when they were little. I wasn't much up with the lullabies so you make the best of what you know.

Y'know ~ I was trying to think up a song to add, the only one I can think of that I have to stop/sit and listen to whenever it comes on is 'Whiter Shade of Pale' by Proco Harum. It never fails. I still know a few that I remember old flames from, so those emotions swell back pretty quickly.

Queen's Rapsody's another one, but more fun than actually being potent..

            >Don you are all about the Manowar lately!!

            Oh, it's not lately.

            >There's so much music that hits me emotionally I couldn't even begin to list it all.

Very true. And different songs call up different emotions. I NEEDED the money, and HATED basic training.... went to bed every night listening to "Heart of Steel" on the headphones. Kinda summed things up pretty well.

A lot of songs make me think of characters from my stories. "Sign of the Storm" by Eric Gales is a good one for that. Chokes me up 'cos it relates to a death that HAS to happen in the story.

Some stuff is just musically overwhelming. The entire "Beethoven's Last Night" album by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra does that for me. But for the perfect song, it'd be tough to beat this: YouTube - Nightwish-planet Hell WHY doesn't anyone use these guys in a movie? (Actually, this song makes me think of one of them movies where an experiment gone wrong creates an army of zombies. The male singer is singing the parts for the people fighting them, the female the part of the person who caused it.)

Here's a couple that do it for me:

"Is This The World We Created" by Queen. Freddy at HIS BEST.

"All Fall Down" by Ultravox and the Chieftans. Midge Ure is one of the most underated Singers/Composers/Songwriters ever.

"In The Cage" From Three Sides Live by Genesis. Just an amazing performance.

Some have already mentioned it but "MLK" is a great song...but it has to be mixed with "Unforgetable Fire".

"Funeral For A Friend" by Elton John.

Just a few that do it for me.
"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
              The beauty that surrounds them
              Isn't it a pity".

              - "Isn't It A Pity"
              By George Harrison

My favorite Queen ballad is Love of My Life:

But the version that gets me more is when Brian May sings it in Freddie's memory...I get teary-eyed every time:

Lots of songs choke me up, but probably the oddest one is Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car."

I went to a boarding school for high school and during my senior year one of my friends was trying to deal with his parents' divorce. He was the most outgoing, social, friendly guy and was always upbeat about everything. But there were times, later in the evening (usually after a call home) when he'd play this song. He never wanted to talk about it with anyone and I think his playing this song was his way of letting us know he was upset.

In any case, I hear this song and I think about my friend being miserable and that hurts. I haven't talked to him in almost 20 years and I still think of him every time the song comes on the radio.
