When music hits you with a wave of emotion...

You know the feeling - You hear a track, it may be new to you, it may be one you've heard a hundred times before, but for some reason it sparks a wave of emotion.

This was the last one to do it to me. YouTube - Dice - Finley Quaye I heard it for the first time on a compilation album and it literally stopped me dead in my tracks - no idea why.

This Jonny Cash track does the same YouTube - Johnny Cash Hurt

And just about the Whole of U2s Joshua Tree gets me everytime.

    What gets you?
"I should say I`m very much cleverer than any of the people who put me here. As a matter of fact, I could leave any time I wanted. It`s only a doll`s house after all. Anyway, I don`t mind. I like dolls" - The Mad Hatter, Arkham Asylum.

George Harrison All Things Must Pass album. I played it a lot when I was a young kid. For some reason when I hear it, it reminds me of my childhood and brings back memories. Not sure why I played the record(s) alot when I was a kid. I think I was fascinated with the big size of the album package and the colorful record inserts. It isn't great compared to a lot of music I have listened to but the album played in it's entirely reminds me a lot of stuff when I was a kid.
There are a couple of other albums at the time I was alternating with that do the same thing but this is the one that stands out for me that fits my response to your post.

Brian Wilson - That Lucky Old Sun in concert.
          Divine Comedy - Charmed Life
Neil Finn - One Nil tour

It was an amazing feeling when I first heard the above. I can't wait to get the album version of That Lucky Old Sun, it's a great new set of songs that show Brian still has it in him.

There are a few songs that bring a wave of emotion for me but it is usually due to my association with certain events or people.

Patsy Cline-Crazy-My dad's favorite song. He died 14 years ago and in the rare instance I hear the song, makes me think of the big lug.

UB40-Red, Red Wine-Invited my (now wife) to a college formal (it was our first date and was very nervous since I admired her for quite some time but finally had the nerve to invite her). The song was playing, she laid the first kiss on me and 20 years after that first kiss, we are still together.

Luther Vandross-Here and Now-My wife and I danced to this as our wedding song as husband and wife.

Peter Gabriel-That Voice Again-Although I had my share of girlfriends before my wife, there was really only one that I had any deep feelings for before my wife. We both are/were big Peter Gabriel fans and this song just came out around the time we started dating so it still makes me think of her when I hear it.

There are numerous songs that do it for me, but one that comes to mind right now is James Taylor's "Fire and Rain."

What the song is really about from James himself:

I was glad to see Neil Finn get some love.

I agree with the "time travel" aspect of songs more than the immeidate emotional impact... the second side of "Babylon and On" by Squeeze plays, and I'm trying to figure out how to salvage my relationship with my first serious girlfriend. "Two Step" by Dave Matthews is on, and I'm jamming down De Anza Boulevard in my brand new Mustang with the windows down even though it's chilly as hell out...

I could go on and on!

"Heart of Steel" by Manowar. If you want to know what it feels like to get shipped off for four months of basic training, this is it.

Don you are all about the Manowar lately!! All men play on ten, brother

There's so much music that hits me emotionally I couldn't even begin to list it all. A huge majority of my strongest memories have some connection to certain songs or albums or artists that were playing at the time. Much like a particular scent or a time of the year does, hearing a song can instantly take me back to a certain time in my life or incident.

Recently I listened to the song, "The Last Farewell" By Roger Whittaker, and it got me very emotional because of two reasons. One because they used to play it as the "theme" music for WGN Channel 9 when I was a kid and I can remember that so clearly. Secondly because my father used to listen to that song alot when I was young, and it instantly reminds me of him.

Here's a couple followups to "Hurt" by J.C.

Pretty deep and emotional stuff toward the end.
