The Penguin can be done right. Just ask Paul Dini and Bruce Timm.

If Nolan gets someone like Philip Seymour Hoffman (or any of the others posted here), he's already half there because that's a first-class actor...Seymour could certainly take the role of the Penguin into a different direction like Ledger approached the Joker.

He could be like this well-dressed short gangster (kinda like Scarface)...who just happens to dress in tuxedos (perhaps he's an opera fan or something), has an affection for umbrellas (collector), and occasionally even wears a top hat (but only once or twice in the movie). Seymour will bring his own voice into the role, he would not be copying the previous Penguins and talk with that quack, quack, quack, bird voice, lol. He could be an eloquent speaker, very refine, the total opposite of Tim Burton's Danny DeVito Penguin. A gentleman with a vicious streak.

Oh perhaps...Nolan will bypass how the Penguin dresses...and just have a short gangster...and he is simply called Penguin because he's short and pudgy and has a slightly large nose.

But I like the opera thingie...the Penguin simply likes to attend events were a tuxedo is needed...and with his physical attributes...the Penguin monicker makes sense.

Then can certainly go in many directions here.

So yes, I think the Penguin character could be handled in a realistic way.

        Just my two cents.

That could be REALLY cool!!!!! I'd pay to see that!!

Well it's a shame he feels that way. The character of Robin The Boy Wonder has added a tremendous amount to The Batman mythology, and has been a HUGE contributor to it's longevity and success in the American psyche for nearly 70 years.

Though that may be true, it doesn't neccessarily mean it' the best that CAN be done. Of the existing movies, you're saying this is the best done to date. Still doesn't mean it couldn't be better.

Philip Seymor Hoffman would be a great modern Penguin. Jason Alexander looks good, but he's more like the Silver Age version. I just don't see Jack Black in this part. That other guy Lerner looks good, but I'm not familiar with his work. The only thing with the Penguin is that in recent years he's basically been a gangster/sleezy club owner. I could see him in a cameo in the current Batman movies, but not in a major villain role. He wouldn't be that much of a threat to Christian Bale's Batman. Maybe Bats could show up at the Iceburg Club and rough him up in an interrogation, or they could show him being arrested as a minor player in a crime ring, but that's all I'd really want to see of him.
It's a shame that they don't want Robin, because he's one of my favorite characters. I can kind of see their point, they don't seem to want to lighten up this Batman(at least for now). I'd probably hate the costume anyway, since that's the one thing I've really disliked about the movies so far. But green short pants and a red tunic wouldn't work either. That said, I could still see them setting up for Jason Todd, even if he doesn't become Robin yet. I know that no one will agree with me on this, but try to imagine some punk kid in the narrows trying to mess with the Batmobile, and Batman catching him. Bruce doesn't hurt him because he's just a kid, maybe takes pity on him and gives him some money for food or something. Maybe the kid shows up later and Alfred convinces Bruce to help him out.
I agree that Clayface, Man-Bat and Killer Croc would all be weird, in that big hulking CG character wouldn't quite fit. I don't see the Riddler working for the same reasons that I don't want to see the Penguin.
Selina Kyle would be an interesting choice. I've also heard people talking about the Mad Hatter. I know he doesn't seem like much of a threat, but if you've read "Secret Six," you know he can be a real sicko. My pick to play him would be Ian Holm.

I'd like to see Batman face off with Catwoman and Poison Ivy....and meanwhile, Bruce Wayne has his hands full with their alter egos Selina Kyle and Pamela Isley (Isley trying to use her seductive powers to gain control over Wayne Enterprises). You could also throw in Ra's Al Ghul's revenge-seeking daughter Talia into the mix for good measure...

I disagree with that. Batman Begins had 2 villians that were unknown to the general public and it was a huge success. I agree with you that if the Penguin was done the right way, i could work. He is represented much better now in the comics as he used to be my least favorite villian. I'm all for Ma Parker and Shame

My take on this goes as follows:

THE PENGUIN: Jack Black (whom I can't stand) reminds me of the Penguin in "The Batman" animated series in terms of personality.

I really don't want to see the Penguin reinterpeted for the Nolan/Bale movies UNLESS he is the legitimate buisinessman making illegitimate dealings in his private nightclub. That's the version I could see working. Not a rehashing of Burgess Meredith or Danny DiVito. So Penguin is a maybe.

CATWOMAN: Other than the Joker and Two Face, she is the only other previously used villain that I would like to see reinterpreted for the Nolan/Bale era of Batman films.

RIDDLER, MR. FREEZE, POISION IVY, BANE: I feel about them the way some feel about Robin in these movies. NO!! I don't want to see ALL the previously used villains back again.

NEW VILLAINS PLEASE!!!! I want to see either Man Bat, ClayFace, or
Killer Croc. A villain of fright if you will. Or even better. Talia Al Ghul. Carmen Elektra would be so cool in that role. Or for more realistic style, how about Rupert Thorne or Hugo Strange, or Maxie Zuess

NEW BUT NO: Mad Hatter, Scarface & the Ventriloquist, Harley Quinn. Simple enough. No Robin? Okay then, no Batgirl and no Harley

ROBIN: Christian Bale to me has something in common with Michael Keaton, in that not only have they portrayed Batman, but they're both Robin haters.
MAKE NO MISTAKE: I WANT TO SEE ROBIN IN A FUTURE BATMAN MOVIE: But not if it's Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale's movie series. Nolan/Bale represent Bruce's younger days as Batman where Dick Grayson would be only an infant or toddler with his parents with the Haley Circus. So it would be illogical for Robin to be in this series.
I believe that Robin being in any future Batman movies would make a movie series in itself. Like Anakin Skywalker's journey in the three Star Wars prequels. I could see Dick Grayson's parents being murdered in one movie. Training and helping Batman in civillian mode in a second film and not suiting up as Robin until a third one. And we would see him age from a child to an able bodied, muscle toned teenager for Robin. And it needs to be Dick Grayson. Not Jason Todd or Tim Drake.
In order for there to be a movie with Batman and Robin done right, you need the right director and the right actors who can make the movie work and keep it faithful to the comics without Schumachering it up. For a reference point, Frank Miller and Jim Lee's All Star Batman and Robin would be a good reference point. I believe it can work. You just need the right people.
BATGIRL: If Robin does not fit into the Nolan/Bale Batman world, then neither does Batgirl. Nuff Said.

                        Anyway, those are my thoughts.

                        Cheers.

To me, Penguin is just not a worthy adversary for Batman.
