Maggie has gorgeous blue eyes and a sexy, slim figure. Just the way she moves her body (qv the scene in the court hallway after Dent punches out the witness) is entrancing. But more than all of this, it's her personality, her charisma, the snappy way she delivers her lines, that make her so perfect for this character. Katie Holmes was fine -- and underrated, IMO, in a bold and largely thankless role -- but there's something about Gyllenhall that imbues the Rachel character with the ring of truth. Does every actress need to a be model-quality beautiful? What's wrong with casting a relatively normal-looking person in a key part, especially one with such prodigious talents as Maggie?

If anyone harbors any doubts about how sexy Gyllenhall can be, I recommend renting the 2001 movie Secretary, and prepare to keep the pillows handy to hide the bulge in your pants.

Totally Agree!! She was excellent casting and is a beauty in her own right.......I'm sick of casting model types to play these type of roles anyways.....she was way better than Holmes.

I second that. I love Maggie and thought she held her own with the rest of the cast in a way Katie-poo never could.

Also, in case no one could guess where I'd land on this issue, I'm a HUGE fan of the Christian Bale Batman -- voice, movement, costume and character. The gravelled voice masks his true identity and creeps out the criminals; the suit blocks the inevitable bullets, vehicular bashes and dog-bites; the cape completes the iconic look and is functionally aerodynamic.

Looking at film stills you could nitpick the differences from the comic-book costume design; but in the movie itself, Batman moves so quickly and/or in shadow that you hardly even get a bead on the suit. The silhouette remains, along with the gray-black tones and the utility belt. It's realistic, logical, and note-perfect.

Fantastic analogy...well said, my man.

The only thing I highly doubt it will happen is Mark Hamill playing the Joker on screen. Sadly he is just too old now. Like you said, had it been about 20 years earlier...like in the first Tim Burton Batman...Hamill would have made a much better Joker than Jack Nicholson...who I never really embraced as a true Joker...Jack was simply too pudgy for the role.

Agreed! Damn he would have been sweet as the Joker but too old now. If you see the episodes of the Flash when he played the Trickster you can see a jokeresque type style he had.......but there is no need to do the Joker anymore that's done and for this Generation now Ledger is the Joker until the next great actor comes along......Batman has so many other Rogue villans to explore.....

forget about another sequel they can't top this. But hollywood is all about making money so they will make another batman. i just won't see it.

Saw it yesterday...I'll see it again on Imax. I would like to think more about what it's trying to say. My opinions, succinct as possible.

1. Ledger's performance is everything they say and more. I was anticipating more explicit sadistic violence, but the worst of it happens offscreen. The philosophy of the character was interesting and compelling and with something relevant to say--definitely the best villain ever in a comic movie--performance and concept.

2. Batman himself...is almost an afterthought he's so eclipsed by everyone else. The Bale horse voice is not working. The black armor suit is really not working. The cape is an afterthought until he needs to fly. I wish they'd find new ways to show Batman fighting rather than the shadowy blur and thud. However, the questions it grapples with about the effect of Batman on his world is very interesting.

3. The Harvey Dent material was the nastiest and most depressing part of the movie. Well done story arc and it felt like a Greek tragedy as Chris said.

4. Gordon is great.

5. Never once did I say to myself, "Gee, I miss Katie Holmes".


But the other thought I had at the end was this: They've made a really great, serious movie and they've kind of taken the fun out of Batman. Same thought I had after Superman Returns...they've hit the mark on the heroes that others have missed--visually, thematically...but...I'm not feeling exhilarated at the end.
