Looks great. I like the cozy look of the home.

Is there any reason the cable box needs to be in sight, to change channels or anything?

Maybe there would be an inexpensive way to swap out the current shelf over the fireplace and allow for the cable box without it appearing to be an eyesore? It doesn't look like there is enough room on either side to install a full mantel.

Nice job, for sure! very nice house, by the way.

I've also wondered about the heat from a fireplace damaging a TV that's mounted above it.

We have a gas fireplace with the TV on top of it. The mantle does get noticeably hot after a few hours of the fireplace turned on. We haven't had a problem with this because the only time we had to leave the fireplace on bigtime was during the big storms late last year that knocked the electricity out in our area...so no matter how hot the fireplace got, we couldn't watch TV anyway!!

We live in the Bay Area, so we hardly put the fireplace on. The thermostat is automatically set so that if it gets too chilly, the forced air heat cranks up so the fireplace is rarely ever turned on.

Yeah, that was the second thing I'd be worried about. The third thing would be having it come crashing down off the wall in the middle of the night.

Of course, I have different worries with my TV. Like worrying about my two year old deciding one day to start pounding on the screen, which he can easily reach. Luckily, he's been trained well (so far) and knows not to touch the TV, if he wants to continue watching it. I don't even see little fingerprints on the screen anymore, I'm so proud of him.

In our old house, when we had the 95 pound TV set up on the wall above the mantle, I would constantly tell the kids not to hang out near the TV on the floor (I was always worried about earthquakes although we haven't had a major one since 1989)...

Our house is much bigger now and I rarely see them hanging out right in front of the fireplace. I think this new tv weighs as much if not more than the old one.

Great living room pics. We're getting a new TV this weekend. Our living room is too small for one above the fireplace. We'd all have major neck issues from staring up all the time. My hubby will be setting it all up to a computer so we'll be all tech'd out. UGGG technology, it's a love/hate thing with me.

I did the same thing this weekend, and it was a much more complicated task, as I had a built in cabinet (Arizonans love their built ins) and I managed to get a 52" Sony Bravia in a 37 inch cabinet. Well, not so much in it as coming out of it, but it took some creative engineering, an adjustable telescoping wall mount, and some creative woodwork, but its now protruding out like the monstrosity it should be. I probably should have taken pictures, and I'm still hooking up and replacing cables and wires out the ying yang, but its an awesome change.

The table it is sitting under now will be gone soon. I have an end table coming with a bottom shelf that the box will sit on. It will still be in sight, but it will be much neater than it is now. I did have the box behind the chair and I could change channels if I aimed the remote just right.

As for the heat from the fireplace, I live in south Louisiana and will probably never use it.

As for it falling, this thing has four LARGE wood screws six inches long screwed into studs, it isn't going anywhere. The TV really doesn't weigh that much in the first place. It weighs probably 1/2 the weight of my 36" regular TV.

I mounted a TV once, but had to stop when the folks at Best Buy threatened to have me arrested.

I had to read that a couple of times before I got it....
