Ok, here's a real gut buster: QUEEN is the absolute best band to ever walk the face of the planet... They invented music and everybody else should be indebted to them for the rest of their natural born lives... We should all bow our heads before them as they graced us with such wonderful masterpieces as "Fat Bottomed Girls" and "You're My Best Friend"... Truly, music has no other name than QUEEN...
We all have our musical preferences. The discussion here isn't who is better, it's that Rogers doesn't fit the bill for Queen's music. Nor would Freddie Mercury sound right singing Shooting Star.
Artists who get stuck doing what they did in their hayday become cartoons of their former selves. It's sad. Look at Robert Plant now. Even he can't do the Led Zepplin thing anymore. He's aged and sounds like crap when he tries. However, his recent album with Alison Krauss is very cool. No, it doesn't sell like an old Zep record, but it's more true to who he is today.
If they realy wanted to they could find a freddie sound alike. Other bands have done it.
It may be tough knowing freddies range, but I still think it could be done.
But they decided lets not replace him, we'll just bring in a old friend.
I can't believe anybody whose a fan of Queen defending them touring with another singer, seriously. Tribute? more like "cash cow". "They have to eat", "can't get jobs at McDonald's", two of the funniest statements I've read in a while, get real buddy, it's called "royalties". 99% of bands that replace their original lead singer with somebody new completely suck no matter how talented the replacement singer is (AC/DC being the only exception that immediately comes to mind), for me though I respect the band a lot more if they at least attempt new material rather than ride the coattails of the past.

I agree - I am also not trying to say who is better - that is to a point a matter of preference. I am not even trying to say I would replace Freddidie with a clone. the were many performances at the Tribute that were very good that did not attempt to sound like him.
Rogeres simply is not right for the part. I would have been fine with him doing ONE song at the tribute but to go on with him is a mockery. Either go on with a clone, pick someone who fits the bill better with their own styl, having Taylor and may do vocals, or quit altogether. Just don't pigeon hole your band with someone who is not right for the part.
Bands have done well with replacements over the years - AC/DC is a prime example.
I don't mind him with May and Taylor. Rodgers had a powerful voice, not as powerful as Freddies' but he does have some "umph" to him that puts the songs across IMHO. I think it's interesting that they call themselves Queen + Paul Rodgers, and not just Queen. I think they realize they are skating on thin ice a bit "replacing" Freddie so they don't quite go all the way with it.

Exactly, much like Robbie Krieger and Raymond Manzarek with Ian Ashbury calling themselves, The Doors of the 21st Century. It is a respect thing.
Sure, Ian Ashbury for some reason is now baring an uncanny resemblance to Jim Morrison on stage but they did what they had to make money without crossing the line with the fans.
The difference with Queen and The Doors is that the Doors hired a rock singer for a rock band, where as Paul Rodgers is not a pop singer. I think that may throw some people off.
