In the Southeast Pacific, lies the sunken city of R'Leyh. There lies C'thulhu waits to return to our world with the other Great Old Ones. A hideous creature of enormous size and alien power, it waits for it's time to return patiently. For it has all the time in the world while it waits for the stars.
All rap is just a forum for people who have no singing talent.
The music is lousy too, mostly made up of SAMPLES of existing songs, or keyboard meanderings.
Rap is not music, imo
I would'nt say that man,it's probably easier to find a good singer then it is to find a good rapper,I would'nt say it's the best music around but you defintely have to have skills and talent to be good
I like where it all began: Rapper's Delight by the SugarHill Gang, I also like The SugarHill Girls, GrandMaster Flash & The Furious Five, Arrested Development, Heavy D, Salt & Pepa & TLC.
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."
I am eclectic when it comes to music, actually pretty much everything when I think about it. I also like old school rap, hip hop anything I can bust a move too. LOL
>The beastie boys, 3ed base,LL Cool J top my list.
Y'know... those aren't real old school. You're gonna hafta go back 10 or 15 years....
>Rapper's Delight by the SugarHill Gang,
THERE ya go!
The last batch of rappers were, by my count, the third wave; and wow, did they suck! Yes, yes, you're jewelry is very shiney, your car is very expensive, and I'm sure your genitals are immense. EVERY SONG exemplarated this! Even the ones that were supposed to be meaningful, deep, or personal eventually degraded into self congradulatory claptrap. Eminem was the most inventive of the batch, and he only had TWO songs: the above, and "waahhh, mom doesn't love me and I'm a lousy dad!"
*pfffth!*
Not that I'm really a fan of the previous two generations. Wave 1 (mid 70's or so) was kinda shallow; but at least they were trying. Wave 2 (late 80's) was still kinda shallow; but there was a LOT of experimenting: seeing how far you could push the censors, working in social commentary, combining with other types of music.... Unfortunately none of that made it to the last wave.
And yes, Anthrax counts. Collaborations with guys like them and Biohazard led to the new pseudo-punk/rap stuff like Linkin Park, Korn, Limp Bizkit; which stands on it's own 'cos it's too metal to be rap, too rap to be punk, and too punk to be metal.
I don't understand that "hate" and subsequent dismissal of rap as "music"----You can
hate bananas but that doesn't dismiss them as fruit
Spoken word in rhyme and tonal placement and punching certain words
alongisde arranging music and percussion samples is just as much an art form
and artistic expression as any other music performance
With that being said---I love a lot of early rap---I guess what Don C. would consider
SILVER AGE RAP ala early to mid 80s rap----mostly party stuff----especially the BEASTIES
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix

That's awesome---if more modern rock bands sung about this stuff---rock would be cooler

Run-DMC Aerosmith "Walk this way"
Thats about the only rap I listen to.
Did see Run DMC when they opened for Aerosmith, they put on a good show.
That was a great tour run dmc - Kid Rock - Aerosmith
Show ended with the rap walk this way
>I don't understand that "hate" and subsequent dismissal of rap as "music"
Rap has the same problem my much loved Metal does: as a genre of music it's REAL EASY to make something identifiable as "rap." Which means a lot of people who have NO BUSINESS doing music can do it. (K-Fed anyone? Anyone....?) To the uninitiated it's tough to separate the horrendous stuff from the good, so it all sort of bleeds together into one classification.
I wouldn't listen to an entire CD of Rap, but an occational song thrown in the mix is fine. I tend to like the old school stuff and the ones that make it to the mainstream. But I never seek it out.
...with the exception of Opera, I have tried and just don't care for it, oh and polka, which just plain sucks. That is the great thing about music, there is something for everybody.
Aw shucks! I love arias! I love opera!! I don't know if this counts as polka (I think it's swing), but I was listening to Strip Polka by the Andrew Sisters while stuck in traffic....

Sounds like a WEIRD AL title

Don C.
I doubt that's the answer.
Just because K-Fed or someone that's amatuerish has been on the radio
doesn't mean that people haven't had an equal chance to hear the
BEASTIES or RUN DMC----some people simply have a vendetta against
certain genres of music (is the way I see it)
Why people revel in ignorance like pigs in...um...mud...I have no idea
It should be obvious they are maybe not the best to judge
a certain thing---- as millions of others deem it worthy entertainment
---I mean rap has been HUGELY successful
for YEARS
and like rock 'n roll---it's NOT going away
