              think about this...
how many songs can you think of by todays "Stars"? and how many people do you think that can name a song by kiss, prince, queen or whoever is on this list? groups that were out before the 90's...people will always remember for one reason or another....

True, and Jackson might be the true definition of Genius...
A very troubled but brilliant individual.

If not genius, these guys are at least Prodigy:

                      Jimi Hendrix

                      David Bowie

                      Syd Barrett

                      Frank Zappa

                      David Gahan of Depeche Mode

                      Kurt Kobain

Robert Johnson - Old Blues Artist that Led Zeppelin owe much to.

                      John Lennon

I would have mentioned the Beatles, but I thought that went without saying.

Classically, I'd go for Mozart and Tchiakovsky. From popular music, it's Brian Wilson, Lennon/McCartney, Difford/Tilbrook (Squeeze), Neil Finn (Crowded House) and Prince for me.

I would include the following pop musicians to the genius list: Prince, Stevie Wonder, maybe Roger Waters......the rest of you folks are a little off base with Kiss, Queen, etc.........those were solid BANDS, with good FRONTMEN.........they are in no way musical geniuses with regards to theoretical music structure. Just showman......Barry
Manilow went to Julliard and is likely a MUCH better musician than most people that have been brought up. Michael Jackson was a genius in terms of being a great showman and selling a product.......but those tunes were Quincy Jones arrangements......Quincy was the musical genius behind thriller.
