I really don't think most hunters would choose a bow over a gun if given a choice but they are forced to use bows because in some states bow hunting is all that is allowed for certain types of game (like whitetail deer).
Ironically, I think cross bows are illegal to own in the U.S. except under special circumstances (such as having a particular handicap)....so I guess they are considered more deadly than guns (they can be just as powerful but are almost silent).
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that gun ownership is explicitly spelled out as a right to potentially thwart a tyrannical leader in the U.S. from holding its citizens hostage. Of course, with the advance of weaponry I'm not sure owning a gun would do much good if the someone became so powerful in the U.S. that they could turn the entire military on its own people but I believe that's the basic premise and why so far, U.S. citizens have been able to get their hands on assault weapons when there is no apparent reason to own one for hunting or self protection per se.
In reality, and again my opinion only, gun ownership really only gives one a false sense of security. Most shooting deaths occur in inner cities where guns run rampant and local gangs and thugs basically use them on one another also killing innocent victims along the way. Unfortunately, illegalizing guns will probably do absolutely nothing to the murder rate since there are too many guns in the wrong hands and most murders are committed by people who do not legally own the gun used in the crime.
